Just need clarification. I entered Thailand visa free. I applied for non-o in Australia. I have just received visa today. Do I have to leave Thailand and re-enter on non-o or can it be done while still in country?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquired whether they need to exit Thailand to activate their recently issued Non-O visa, which they applied for from Australia. Community responses clarified that exiting Thailand is necessary to activate the visa. They mentioned that upon leaving and re-entering Thailand, the new visa allows for a stay of 90 days, starting from the re-entry date. Additionally, the timing of visa applications and extensions was discussed, emphasizing the benefits of aligning stay permit timelines with annual extensions.

Greg Low . keep in mind: when you enter Thailand and activate the 90 days stay permit, the 1-year extension of stay will start and expire exactly 90 days after the date when you entered. If for example you exit Thailand now, and re-enter to activate the visa tomorrow on December 16th, you will get stamped in for 90 days, and the 1-year extension of stay based on retirement will start on March 13th. This date will remain the date when your annual "1-year EOS" will expire and needs to be applied for up from 30 days earlier. In case are sure that you will always be inside Thailand every year until this date and apply up from 30 days before this date, you are fine. If you wait until your 60 days stay permit expires, you are shifting this date further away from March 2026 and thus for every future year

What I meant to say:

For my own convenience, I regularly hibernate in Thailand since 18 years, from end September/beginning of October, to mid-March.

Placing my annual Extension of Stay Permit expiry date on January 4th, which means into the absolute middle-term of my stay, has advantages:

I do my 90-days report on the same day I apply for my next extension of stay.

And before my next 90-days report becomes due, I have already flown back to Europe. Easy peasy.

you've made this comment twice and also another about "rainy season". What difference does it make as to when extensions of stay start or end? Also, do Immigration Offices close for rainy season, or days when it rains at that time of year? It doesn't rain every day of rainy season does it, preventing someone from going to their Immigration Office?

Yes you need to leave to activate your new visa. Wait the 60 days you got. It’s valid for 90 days from issue.

depending . .if he waits, the date of the annual Extension of stay moves further out into the Thai rainy season. Mind ya - the 1-year extension will start on the day after expiry of the 90 days stay permit

I think you can leave for a nearby country and re-enter on your new non-O. Make sure they see it and stamp you in correctly.
