Hello, my ED visa is about to expire and I will be leaving the country and then coming back in on a 30 day tourist visa. Do I still need to update the TM30?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When transitioning from an ED visa to a 30-day tourist visa in Thailand, it is necessary to handle your TM30 updates and visa cancellations properly. If you are on an extension of your ED visa, you are required to visit the immigration office to cancel it officially before leaving Thailand. Failure to cancel may lead to fines upon your return for any overstays. However, if you are still within the original 90 days of your ED visa, you may not need to take any action before leaving.

, you would take a paper from your school stating you are no longer studying anymore and go to the immigration office before that to cancel your extension.

They will cancel your current extension and stamp you in until the date on the paper from the school (which the school usually writes is the last day of your extension). This cancels it in the immigration system and then when you leave the country and come back you're fine.

The question on whether you need to go to the immigration office and cancel your stamp before you leave or not comes down to whether you're on the first 90 days of the ED visa OR if you're on an extension of stay.

If you're on the original 90 days you got from the ED visa you do not need to do anything and when you stamp out of the country you're fine

IF you're on an extension of stay you got from the immigration office you technically need to take paperwork from your school to the immigration office and cancel your extension

Don’t forget to cancel your extension (based on ED) before you leave Thailand, as it’s not cancelled automatically on departure, and you could face a fine up to 20,000 Baht for overstay on your next stay in Thailand.

Even though you may return on a new Visa, when you next report to immigration to extend/90 day report etc...they may notice that your previous extension of stay was not cancelled, and subsequently fine you for overstaying that extension!

Lexi Sara yes you need to get a letter from your school stating to cancel the extension on the date you plan to leave Thailand, then take it to immigration to have it cancelled

okay so even though I have completed my 12 months visa and I am leaving before the date it finishes, I still need to cancel it right? And how do I cancel it?

IF you are on an extension of stay it doesn't necessarily cancel when you stamp out of the country.

So even though my ED visa expires next week, and I’m not planning to renew it at all ... I still need to cancel it?

If you are indeed in Chiang Mai like your profile says YEP, you will need to take your TM.30 receipt to the immigration office and let them update their database and stamp it when you come back into the country
