This maybe a stupid question but I live in Chiang Mai and I am currently in Hua hin on vacation. On my return to Chiang Mai do I have to update my TM 30 to show I am back in Chiang Mai? Or is it only necessary to do this when I leave the country? TIA

TLDR : Answer Summary
When returning to Chiang Mai from a vacation in Hua Hin, you do not need to update your TM 30 unless you have arrived back from an international trip. The TM 30 update is required only when your international arrival card (TM 6) changes, which occurs when you enter Thailand from abroad.

And we're done (y) thanx all for the comments..

Okay, we can all at least agree on one thing. Different immigration offices do the TM.30 differently.

I can say with 100% confidence that in Chiang Mai you ONLY go get a TM.30 recepit updated IF you have come back IN to the country. You do not need to do it if you come back from travel inside the country

This is what they do when you update your TM.30 receipt in Chiang Mai

It really sucks every immigration office makes up their own rules, or interprets the laws so differently. It would be so much better if the chief of the immigration division dictated to all the offices how the law should be interpreted and applied and every foreigner in the country has the same burden as every other. It should not be this game of immigration office roulette where some people get relatively lucky (such as in Bangkok) and others get screwed (such as in Samut Phrakan and Phuket).

I was in Hua Hin last month and when i came back to Chiang Mai, i had to tell my landlord. They updated it online.

in Chiang Mai 100% it's ONLY when you come back from overseas because that's the only time your arrival date into the country and your TM.6 arrival/departure card changes.

@Tod ********
, so why not just follow the rules to 100% in this matter?

Then there will be no problems with different interpretations....

which while anecdotally interesting does NOT answer the question I asked you.

Now I mean NO disrespect at all but it comes down to either you DO live in Chiang Mai and have something to add to the conversation

OR

you don't and you're saying what they do in your area of the country which may or may NOT be relevant at all.

@Tod ********
, do you live in Chiang Mai and do you personally go to that immigration office?

@Tod ********
, I just know that they are getting stricter and stricter all over Thailand now....

@Dick *********
and my question to you is simple

Do YOU live in Chiang Mai and use that immigration office?

If the answer is no, then your experience at another office is not all that relevant.

100% sure about that... Because here in Phuket we always have to report our address again if we have been to a hotel for let say only 1 night :/

Only when your TM6 card changes. International arrival.

you were told wrong. :/

Last time I went to update I asked the same question to the officer. He said "every time you stay out of CM province".
