Do I need to take an online driving test to renew my Thai driver's license from 2 to 5 years?

ORIGINAL POSTER
Question regarding Thai 2 yr drivers license renewal to obtain 5 year license. I’ve been here 2 years on retirement visa and now time to renew motorcycle and car licenses.

I saw on a YouTube post that to renew my license I need to take an online driving test first while watching a 1 hour video and include the “passed” certificate with my renewal application and other docs. Is this correct? I’ve spoken to others expats who have renewed within the last year or two and they said they didn’t have to do the online test. Anyone renewed recently that had to do the online test first? Looking for input from anyone who’s recently renewed.

Thank you in advance!

TLDR : Answer Summary
The necessity of taking an online driving test to renew a Thai driver's license from 2 to 5 years appears to vary based on individual circumstances and possibly the specific Department of Land Transport (DLT) office. Many recent respondents noted they did not have to take an online test, only simple eye and reaction tests, while some reported being required to watch a video and pass an online test, especially when renewing from a 5 to 5 year license. It's suggested to check with your local DLT for the latest requirements, as these can differ by province.

Following up on this post, I did my online test on Sunday watched through the 1 hour video and answered 4 questions that came up during the video. At the end I was anticipating on answering 50 questions but when it came to it the same 4 questions came up which I answered again then I clicked next and got my certificate 😂 must have been a glitch in the system but I'm not complaining. Went to the DLT Tuesday afternoon, no queue and all done in about 30 minutes 👍🏼

Hi do not need to watch video and pass any test if you are of old age just get a doctor's certificate certifying good health fill up the form at the office do a few eyesight test and you are good to go !!

The only reasons people move anywhere ruling out the 3 you don’t want to hear about are work and romance! The reasons people stay anger are for love in some form or another! Thailand is not different to the next town over from you in this sense! 🤦🏼‍♂️

you got the answer to your first question but you could by the way have got the 5 year license after 1 year and 1 day BTW.

I renewed recently.. I don't recall taking an online test. I paid someone who had connections and I had to do a couple of manual tests, that was it. I was in and out in 20 minutes. Some people choose to do their license themselves, which involves a couple of trips to a couple of different offices.

Requirements vary from province to province. Consult your local transport office for your requirements. Also download the DLT Smart Que app to make an appointment and find additional information.

I just renewed mine a couple of weeks ago and did not have to do anything online. I did have to do the eye test and the reaction test in Prachuap Khiri Khan.

It’s quite probably office dependent, but to renew my 5 to 5 year license I needed to watch the video test. The person with me was renewing their 2 year to a 5 year and didn’t. I guess you don’t forget how to drive safely in Thailand after two years, but you do after 5.

Go a day after your birthday. You will get 6 years instead of 5 😁

You need to mention, what DLT you are supposed to go. Each DLT, Immigration, Bank branch and SomTum-Shop has it's own rules.

I just went to ask at the licence centre at Joho and they said yes I need to take the online test 😭 This is for a 5 to 5 renewal
Mark *******
They also said I need duplicates of all documents if I'm renewing car and bike at the same time 👍🏼

No test or video required to renew from 2 to 5 year license for me. Only difference was that io would not provide cert of residence. I had to apply at lto and they got the certificate of residence for me.

I saw someone recently say there was no test/video for your 2 to 5 year license renewal, but the 5 to 5 year next time will have it.
