I'm in USA and applying for an OA visa from the USA. I plan on a one way flight but the e-visa application is looking for a departure date. Do i just make up a date?

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for an OA visa while in the USA, you can enter any date within a year of your planned arrival as your departure date, since the visa permits a one-year stay in Thailand. It's noted that other countries, like Australia, also do not require proof of flight bookings for this visa type.

Australia does not ask for proof of flight booking for OA or OX visa

The visa you're applying for gives you permission to stay in Thailand for 1 year so put any date within a year of your arrival date

They don't need proof of departing flight?

I went through the O-A evisa application successfully about 3 weeks ago (Embassy in Hungary) and although the e-visa system did not ask for my flight ticket only for the date, two days after submission I got an e-mail asking for my ticket as “further document”.

That's Thailand Immigration. When you think something should be simple, nope, you are wrong.

shouldn't need one for a non-immigrant visa.
