Do I need to go to immigration before the 60 days of my tourist visa expire and what is the protocol for extending my stay in Thailand?

Happy New Year all ,

My Son and I currently in Phuket on 

A “6 month multiple entry tourist visa”

I am heading home soon , but he is staying for the 6 months to train MuayThai .

Sorry if this is an ignorant question 

But as often as it has been explained , we still dont understand the protocol 

Do we need to go to immigration before 60 days and then leave country 30 days after that and then do the same process for the second half of the 6 months ?

As in office for the first 60 days , then border run at 90 days and then repeat

You cAn do that, but you don't have to get the 30 day extension. You can just leave, and come back, every 60 days, or you can get the 30 day extension before you leave, and return. Either way is fine.

You get a 30 day extension before the 60 is up which will give you 90 days. Then you have to leave and come back and repeat the whole process. Make sure you come back the 2nd time before the 6 month visa expires. That will give you another 3 months. So you can squeeze 9 months out of it.

To get the maximum time you will need to stamp in the last day the visa is valid. I do it at least one day before. This will give you 90 days from the date the visa expires (60 + 30). It actually gives you 90 days from your stamped-in date.
