Do I need to extend my work permit before my visa when they have different expiration dates?

You only need to renew your work permit first as it is necessary to maintain your legal status in Thailand. Once your work permit expires, your visa extension based on employment will also become invalid. You can renew your visa later, as it is valid until January 2019.
