Hi Tod and group! We have a one year volunteer multi entry visa, which ends in August, as well as work permits which expire in November. We are leaving the country in July for hopefully just one year before returning. Do we need to cancel out our visas and/or work permits or can we simply let them run out after our exit?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquired about the necessity of canceling their volunteer multi-entry visa and work permits before leaving Thailand for a year. The comments suggest that if they are on a yearly visa extension requiring 90-day reporting, they should cancel it; however, if on a multi-entry visa with border crossings every 90 days, they may not need to cancel anything. It is strongly advised to cancel the work permit at the Ministry of Labour.
