Hello I'm in Nakhon Pathom canceling my extension based on marriage obtained in Non O and officer told me that I just need to go outside of country and it will canceled automatically. And I'm like NO. If I don't cancel in immigration Thai embassy in Laos will not give me visa (RS) it was always a rule that you need to cancel. Is it possible to do in Nong Khai. Am I right?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is in Nakhon Pathom and intends to cancel their Non-O visa extension based on marriage. They have been informed that by simply exiting the country, the extension will be canceled automatically, but they believe it is necessary to cancel the extension at the immigration office to avoid issues with obtaining a new visa at the Thai embassy in Laos. Comments clarify that the extension must be canceled at the original immigration office and that leaving Thailand without a re-entry permit will automatically void the extension.

So you divorced, showed the court document to the Immigration Officer and they refused to cancel your Extension of Stay based on being married?

You only cancel the Extension of Stay IF the reason of why the permission is given change, in simple words:

An Extension of Stay based on marriage only get cancelled in case of divorce

An Extension of Stay based on being over 50 years of age only change if you are able to travel back in time to be a younger person,

I told him I need to go to make visa. But he told me that I don't need to cancel. Just leave. I worry that embassy will not accept

No need to worry, if you leave without a re-entry permit the Extension of Stay is void and you need a new visa to enter Thailand if you do not want to go visa exempt.

I guess things got mixed up with translations, as you can not change an Extension of Stay based on marriage into a new type of visa.

And that is the reason that he told you to apply at a Thai Consulate and the Extension of Stay ends if there is no re-entry permit at leaving the country.

No, if your extension was issued at Nakhon Pathom immigration office, other offices cannot cancel it.

If you are on a yearly extension based on being married to a Thai, basically you don't have to cancel it. If you want to get another visa, you need to make sure you don't have a re-entry permit on your extension, then you will be able to apply for a visa of a new category.

Without a re-entry permit, your extension based on spouse to a Thai is no longer valid and has no power to stop getting a new visa from the Thai embassy/consulate as of your leaving Thailand <- when being stamped out.

If you already have a valid re-entry permit, you may need to cancel or get it voided by the insurer.

As a general rule, extensions based on marriage or retirement don't have to be cancelled as long as you leave Thailand without a re-entry permit. (other types have to be)

BUT, you need to contact them directly for their own and current regulations.

thank you so much. So his insight was right? Rules changed? I remember in 2014 you couldn't get visa in Laos if you didn't properly cancel your extension
