Can I let my education visa expire and re-enter Thailand on a DTV?

Hey y’all, I have an education visa with a current extension of stay until November 2nd (after that is my final extension, which would only be until mid December)

My school has told me that if I don’t do the extension, the last date I can stay is the 2nd of November.

Can I simply fly out before then, let the extension expire, and then fly back in with a (hopeful) DTV to get stamped in with a new visa?

If not - anybody been in this situation? Cancelled their ED and then went out of Thailand to obtain a DTV? Would love to hear your experience. Read 1 report on here of someone not cancelling but would appreciate additional insights.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster is seeking advice on whether they can allow their education visa extension to expire and then re-enter Thailand with a new DTV visa. Comments suggest that while it's possible to leave before the visa expiry without canceling it, they recommend obtaining a cancellation letter from the school to avoid complications. Several users shared their personal experiences, indicating that some successfully navigated this process without issues.

I have recently went through similar process of leaving when my expiration date was ending

. I decided not to extend as I’ll be returning later this year with the DTV. I tried to do my due diligence and cancel my ED visa just in case I’d run into problems obtaining the DTV. I went to immigration with a rep from my school and letter to cancel but they said that I do not need to cancel IF my Ed visa expires on the 14th of October and I’ll be leaving the 14th anyway. Even if I’m applying for a new visa bc the Thai immigration in Thailand and the embassy in other countries are two separate entities (essentially). And I wouldn’t have any problem obtaining the DTV.

Antoinette Yvonne wow interesting. This is very helpful thank you. This contradicts what I’ve read from

about the necessity to cancel because it wouldn’t just automatically cancel on the end of extension date (not criticizing you Tod, I trust your judgement on all thai visa subjects 😂)

There have been multiple accounts of experiences on this. Keyword search: "ED" or "Education" or "ED Visa",

have you cancelled the extension of stay/contacted your school about the ED visa expiring?
Sarah *******
Anonymous participant I contacted them but they didn’t really seem to have a clue 😅 I didn’t cancel anything, I think I’ll just let it expire (I know multiple others who have also done this)

You need to cancel the extension of stay with a letter from your school but I've heard of people doing so after they return on their DTV. You just need to be careful they stamp you back in correctly

right - I would definitely present the DTV instead of my Edu visa.

Preferably I’d like to cancel it after I come back.

i thought once you leave the country ( if you have ED), it auto cancels. So coming back in, you would just show DTV
