A follow up question. If I report truthfully on my immi card at the airport that I am staying at my girlfriends home, do her parents still need to complete a TM30?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The TM30 form is generally needed to report a foreigner’s residence in Thailand, but it may not be strictly enforced unless there's a specific reason to visit the immigration office. While it's advisable to have it filled out, some users suggest that if you're not planning to deal with immigration for extensions or similar reasons, not filing it may not lead to any repercussions. The TM30 needs to be submitted upon arrival but does not require resubmission during your stay unless you move elsewhere.

ok. thanks for your help guys! I am glad to have found this group. I have mostly stayed in hotels/guest houses in Chiang Mai or in AirBnB in Bangkok so it has not been on my radar.

Honestly I will say this, IF you have no cause to go to the immigration office (for an extension or something) I personally wouldn't even bother filing a TM.30. :O I know that sounds not good BUT

The immigration office has no way of knowing if you did or didn't file one OR where you're actually staying. It's only when people show up at the offices that are hard core about this form to get something done at that office that it becomes a problem.

Follow up question. How long does the TM.30 last? i.e. If I stay at my gf house for 6 weeks do they need to be filled out periodically?

and also if you go somewhere else inside the country, then come back to that address :/

Maybe a border hop is in order instead of an extension

the TM.6 arrival/departure card does NOT count toward having reported to immigrations your address with a TM.30 form within 24 hours of arriving :/ They are totally different forms and used by totally different divisions of immigrations :(

Now, truth be told. IF you are not going to have any cause to visit the immigration office while you are here, they won't know you're here. It's only if you need to use the immigration office for something (an extension, etc) that's when it becomes important (if that office is hard core) to have filed a TM.30

maybe I need to stay at a hotel nearby then

No. Look on this Group, in the last 2 days Tod has posted the link so you can (or the housemaster can at your GF address) register your TM30 online. TM6 is nothing other than your entry and exit information.
