Do I need a reentry permit to renew my work permit in Thailand after leaving for a new visa?

I have a question about a reentry permit. I currently have a Work permit that is about to expire in December and I recently left Thailand to Malaysia to get a non-immigrant B visa for three months. I returned to Thailand and handed in all the documents to my lawyer to apply for the nonimmigrant B one year but also to renew my work permit. I just received a call from my lawyer saying that they’re unable to renew my work permit because when I left the country I didn’t get a reentry permit. I had no idea that I was supposed to do this as my previous visa was expiring and I went to Malaysia to get a new one and entered Thailand with the new one. I’ve only ever used a reentry permit when I was leaving and coming back to Thailand on a single entry non-immigrant B. Could somebody please explain this to me or is my lawyer even correct in this information

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user is confused about the need for a reentry permit after leaving Thailand for a new visa, which has led to complications in renewing their work permit. They have previously used a reentry permit for single-entry visas but did not know it was necessary under these circumstances. Comments suggest a lack of clarity about the situation and recommend further communication with the lawyer or the Ministry of Labor.

And unfortunately, this work permit conundrum is NOT thai VISA related enough to keep the thread open. :/

You're gonna hafta post on another group OR you're gonna hafta disagree with your lawyer and go see why you can't get a work permit from the Ministry of Labour on this Non-B you have now.

Sorry, I did let this topic run a bit to get you some answers.

What visa were you on before you left?

I'm just guessing here, but could the actual problem be that you left the country without cancelling your previous extension of stay? Or did you do that?

There are sometimes problems, when someone enters on a visa, gets an extension of stay, then leaves WITHOUT cancelling that and after that applies for a new visa abroad and wants to get a new extension of stay inside of Thailand.

Extension of stay is what you call it when you get an extension inside of Thailand (based on work, retirement, etc.). Because the original visa "ends", but the extension of stay allows you to stay in Thailand.

I was on another three month non-immigrant B. And that visa expired upon me receiving the new one and I enter the country on the new one

i do not see the connection of a Re-Entry Permit needed to keep a current stay alive and get the same end date on return from Immigration as reason you can not apply for a new year at the Ministry of Labor for your Work Permit. I think things are not really clear about what should be done. The terminology used, as a 1 year Non Immigrant B visa can not be applied within Thailand, I would say contact them again or visit them and sort out first what really is the problem

As you are inside Thailand it is a new application form with the correct visa number, can not be that big problem
