hi so my wife came home and has volunteered me to drive some friends to border at thali (not sure spelling correct)they are going to Laos, she asked me if i want to go, now i am on my non o /retirement extension, I am aware that i would most likely have to do a re-entry permit or loose that. would i also have to do a visa at Laos. Thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual needs a re-entry permit for their NON-O retirement extension before leaving Thailand and will also require a visa to enter Laos, which can typically be obtained at the border. Several commenters confirmed these requirements and provided details about costs and the process for crossing into Laos.

Tha Li/Ban Nakraseng / Kengthao border crossing offers visa on arrival on the Lao side. So no problem.

if you return to Thailand within this month, proof of vaccination may be required. No idea what the rules will be next month.

You need a re-entry permit, and you would also need a Laos visa to enter Laos, that you can get at the border.

I have a UK passport and I would need a Laos Visa on Arrival to enter. You are aware that your car needs a passport to leave and re-enter Thailand aren't you?
