Thanks in advance.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The individual needs a re-entry permit for their NON-O retirement extension before leaving Thailand and will also require a visa to enter Laos, which can typically be obtained at the border. Several commenters confirmed these requirements and provided details about costs and the process for crossing into Laos.

a day I got caught on that early days in my relationship. They wanted to go just to get a stamp in there passport cost them 100baht & me 1500baht for 20 minutes & I had to go through different entry so had no one with me until other side
No idea on visa stuff but years ago went via knog Koh ,hit visa , walked over , then went up north , back down week later , didn’t have any problems , but that was pre covid ! I seriously cannot see you getting any hassle
I have a UK passport and I would need a Laos Visa on Arrival to enter. You are aware that your car needs a passport to leave and re-enter Thailand aren't you?
