Could someone please shed some light? We are on an extension of a visa exemption. Wanting to apply for a retirement visa, have an appointment in Vientiane, Laos. Do we need a police clearance and medical certificate?

TIA

TLDR : Answer Summary
When applying for a retirement visa (Non-O) in Thailand from Vientiane, Laos, there is some confusion regarding the need for a police clearance and medical certificate. It appears that typically, these documents are not required if converting from a tourist visa within Thailand. However, if applying directly in Vientiane, a doctor's certificate and police clearance may be needed based on local requirements. It is recommended to check the specific immigration requirements through local Thai immigration offices or official websites.
NON-O RETIREMENT VISA RESOURCES / SERVICES
  • Go to the Retirement Visa Section for information on requirements, including age restrictions, financial requirements, and necessary documentation.
  • For immediate assistance, contact Thai Visa Centre directly via LINE at @ThaiVisaCentre or Email them.
  • Explore recent discussions by using the Non-O Retirement Visa tag in the search box at the top of the page.

I guess the visa you want to apply for is a non-immigrant O visa, based on being over 50.

In Vientiane they do require a doctor's certificate and a police clearance.

I did it that way. Saved getting police clearance and medical in home country, and may not be affected by new requirements for medical insurance (฿800k method).

that's interesting to know

Yes new med insurance! However one big advantage getting it in your home country is the potential to get almost two years out of the A-O visa.

p.s. in Oz they accept a medical certificate from Thailand made within 6 months

Lots of confusing replies here.

To apply for a Retirement Visa O-A you need to apply “in” your own country (your passport country).

You can apply in Thailand when on a 60 day visa for O (Retirement) visa but will need to meet the requirements including 800,000 baht in a Thai bank etc. best to look up on the Thai Immigration website

.... What is confusing? You can convert to a visa based on being over 50 years of age in Thailand.

Why don't you get a 60 day tourist visa in Vientiane? Convert to a Non O based on being over 50 years old when you're back in Thailand. You don't need police clearance or medical certificate for this but go to your local immigration office and ask for a handout of requirements they need for the specifics of your visa. If you have the funds it should be straightforward.
