Hello ☺️

I was hoping for some feedback.

Do you need a passport to fly from Phuket to Bangkok for proof of identification?

My friend who needs to fly with me has a Thai drivers license and I only have an identification card from Australia. Both our passports are being processed for work permits.

Obviously it is up to the airline’s discretion, I’m just curious if anyone has a negative experience where they have not been able to fly domestically within Thailand without a passport.

Thanks so much 🙏🏽

TLDR : Answer Summary
The discussion centers around whether a passport is required for domestic flights within Thailand, specifically from Phuket to Bangkok. Several users share varied experiences: while some airlines accept a Thai driver's license or a government-issued photo ID, others indicate that an Australian ID may not be acceptable. It's emphasized that airport security may enforce their own rules, making it advisable to check with the airline regarding their specific ID requirements before flying.

I left my UK passport in the hotel and only realised at Phuket check in. They allowed me to use my Thai driving licence as proof! Good luck.

Why don't you just ask the airline you're flying with what is their policy?

No, no, no, Facebook is always there best place to get the best, the most up to date and the most valid information. Especially if it's important information. Never ask the people who have the policy at hand, always put your faith in the opinion of a complete stranger. I mean, it's basic!

Thank you everyone for all your feedback & time, I really appreciate it 🙏🏽🙏🏽

I assumed the Thai DL would suffice, I wasn’t too confident either about the Australian ID

I have flown with just my Aus license many times
Wannikea *********
Government issued Thai photo ID such as DL or pink ID card.
Tony *********
Aus. ID is no good for me anyways flying from DMK/BKK to KK

Your friend is fine with a Thai DL, you're not, however, as an Australian ID is not acceptable per CAAT ID rules - see below. If you've got photocopies of your passport with supporting documentation, you might get away with it, though - but it would be up to not just the airline, but airport security as well.

Also out of interest, when did handing over passports become a requirement to get a WP?

Just show them the booking

try getting through the security gate at DMK without photo ID.....I'll wait.

You don't need passport but do need photo ID. Well you didn't last time I did it a few years ago

A Thai driving licence is fine. I don't know about the Australian ID

I've flown a couple of times to Udon Thani from Bangkok and had to have my passport available to show..

Government issued photo card ID is fine. But not if expired i found out. My Thai drivers licence had expired by one week. I had to hunt for my passport. The security scan staff gave no quarter.

I’ve flown domestically many times in Thailand only using my Aus licenc

@Matthew ******
Then you're lucky.
Matthew *******
@Duncan ******
has been every one of my last 20 flights always been with either air Asia or nok air
Duncan *******
@Matthew ******
then very lucky. I've had Thai AirAsia refuse to accept my Thai DL before to check-in on a domestic flight, be it most times my Thai DL they'll accept.
Matthew *******
@Duncan ******
definitely not then

Last 2 flights were April this year bkk to bfv and back

@Matthew ******
then they aren't following the new rules announced last year by CAAT to no longer accept non Thai IDs as per the graphic someone posted.
