Hey guys,

My passport has expired and as a result I will be flying back to SA on the 26th December. I have to go the embassy in BKK from Phuket to apply for an emergency travel document but the bus ride is almost torture. I just wanted to know if it possible to fly domestically within Thailand with an expired passport? TIA

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquired about the possibility of flying domestically within Thailand using an expired passport. Community responses clarified that while airlines can accept a variety of IDs for domestic flights, including expired passports, it is generally advised not to rely on an expired passport. Additionally, it was emphasized that issues may arise regarding visa validity related to the passport's expiration, and that overstaying without addressing the expired passport situation could lead to fines and penalties.

This is not a travel advice group, so I'm shutting this post down:

1. There is no restrictions or quarantine requirements to travel domestically, inside Thailand.

2. An airline, FOR DOMESTIC FLIGHTS, can accept whatever ID they want, including Thai drivers license, expired passports, etc - however don't expect your expired passport to be accepted. You will *NOT* cross immigration on a domestic flight.

3. >My passport has expired

I believe all extension of stay and visas are valid for the normal stamp, OR the length of the passport, whatever is shorter. The overstay fine is 500THB a day, with a maximum of 20K THB. After 90 days of overstay, if you turn yourself in to immigration, you will be deported to your home country at your own expense and blacklist for 1 year. If you are caught on overstay, the fine will be 20K THB and a blacklist of 5 years. If you can not afford a flight home, the Thai government charges a daily fee for the immigration detention center.

for an overstay video

(since some people want to watch videos instead of reading simple graphics)

Both are from the Thai government

Good luck!

Don't suggest you using an expired passport to take a flight.

Why not? The worse that would happen is the airline won't accept it, and he'd have to use another ID (i.e. drivers license)

@Benjamin *****
they probably won't let you check in. So I suggest her calling flight company to check before buying a ticket.

For flights inside Thailand it is not a problem.

Problem comes when you leave Thailand, the Extension of Stay is until the expire date of your passport.

Be prepared to pay for overstay from that date until the day you leave.
