Hi, I am reviewing the requirement's for a retirement visa. It mentions that you need to have THB 800,000 in a Thai Bank Account. It also mentions a monthly income of at least THB 65,000. So, if I have the required amount in a Thai Bank account do I still need to have a monthly income of THB 65,000 when applying for a retirement visa?

TLDR : Answer Summary
For a retirement visa in Thailand, you can either maintain a minimum of THB 800,000 in a Thai bank account for at least 2 months before applying or have a monthly income of THB 65,000. It is not necessary to provide both; you can choose one of the two options to meet the requirements. However, if you are from a country whose embassy does not issue income affidavits, you must show that you have been transferring the required income amount into your Thai bank account each month for the previous 12 months.

So, the 65,000 THB per month, do I need to work for a Thai employer or can I do remote job helping people globally?

Yes that what I’m saying the poster talks about getting a retirement visa then talks about working ?

Yes and we both know that is NOT ALLOWED. But reality is that retired Expats may have business in their home country and manage it via internet.

must be transferred internationally to your Thai bank account in your name only. And to use the 65,000 Thb for the FIRST year of the retirement Visa and one year extension of stay you must be show PROOF of 12 months of transfers prior to your making application for the Non O Visa as retiree and the One year extension of stay as retired.

In other words... For most applicants ....the first year requires 800,000 Thai baht in the Thai bank

Thanks James for the clarification!

, 65K thb monthly income has to be an international transfer or provide the legit source which isn't salary inside Thailand. No restriction on which country it comes from. Or affidavit by your embassy.

Non-O visa or extension based on Retirement is employment prohibit. If you are working in Thailand, you cannot get that type of visa.

you can't work on a retirement visa. I believe the 65k monthly transfer has to come from your home bank account. I'm not 100% sure, but I'm pretty sure. When it goes into your Thai bank account, the deposit gets earmarked as a Foreign Funds Transfer (FFT) which is what they want to see (I believe)

looking for one for the types of visas to apply for before going

, you can find summarised information for major types of visas on the Department of Consular pages. That doesn't mean those are available at the place you are applying for your visa.

Or immigration bureau pages for types of in-country visas. But this doesn't mean those types are available at your local immigration office either.

Thanks for sharing this information, but it does not say where the

THB needs to come from. If this is from a Thai employer or where can I be employed. I like the idea of digital nomad and I am looking to teach english and guitar lessons online, but this income is not direct from a Thai employer. If someone has some clarification for this that would be great. I need to learn more abut the OA to make sure I meet the requirements.

are you saying you want the OA and work at the same time ?

Well, it looks like I won’t be able to apply for the retirement visa. Because, I need to work at least part time. So, I am going to figure out another option. How about yourself?

@JD *******
To meet the 65,000 baht/month requirement for a 1 year extension as retired the money has to be deposited into your Thai bank account from a foreign source. They don’t care how you got the money. Only that it comes from outside of Thailand because you can’t work here as a retiree and it will say so on your OA visa sticker.

just curious why OA requires medical insurance while the rest no need.😅
Brandon ************
@Philip ****
because the OA doesn't require you have money in Thailand in the event something goes wrong. So the insurance is there instead

@Philip ****
it's specifically REQUIRED of the OA and OX and STV visa

Insurance is also required for the wealthy pensioner category of the new 10 year Long Term Residency visa.

Yes...US $50,000.for the New LTR Visa.

Interestingly you can also meet the insurance requirement with a $100,000 deposit.

yep 👍 same for OA visa...with proof of uninsurable status.

If you have a pre-existing condition, is there medical insurance that would still provide coverage?
Marty *********
@JD *******
I am not aware of any policy that would cover a pre-existing condition but I don’t have a lot of experience shopping around. I’ve read comments of others who had such policies that mentioned that they were expensive. I would think so. How else is insurance supposed to work as a business model? If it is about risk management then you can’t have people waiting until they are sick to buy insurance. My Thai policy, that I bought at age 62, has a few exclusions.

One or the other not both

You bank 800K baht in a thai bank account in your name only (for 2 months before you get the year extension based on retirement)

OR

you show income from abroad of 65K baht a month via the letter your embassy gives you (affidavit of income from abroad notary document)

BUT

if you come from a country whose embassy here doesn't issue the letter you have to transfer in to your thai bank account the 65K baht a month, each month, every month for the previous 12 months before you apply for your yearly extension
Gibbs ******
@Tod ********
what about subsequent 1 year extensions , is it still the 800k baht 2 months before applying? I.e. the second time applying for the retirement extension
Ellie *******
@Gibbs *****
, you need to meet the requirements for 1-year extension every time. You are applying for a new 1-year extension every year, not 'renew'.
Gibbs ******
@Ellie ******
ok thanks so that’s a yes about 800k two months prior every time
Tod *********
@Gibbs *****
the seasoning for banked money method is this

800K baht in a thai bank account in your name only for 2 months before you APPLY for your extension

the 800K baht has to stay in the account for 3 months after the extension is granted

Then the balance can't go below 400K baht the rest of the year until you have to get it back to 800K baht 2 months before you apply for your next extension.

in essence the 400K baht is in the account year round and you need the balance to be 800K for 5 months (2 before and 3 after) every year.
