TLDR : Answer Summary
In Thailand, a 30-day visa exempt stamp can be extended once for an additional 30 days at an immigration office for a fee of 1,900 baht. However, if you enter with a 60-day tourist visa, you can also extend that visa for 30 days once, giving you a total of 90 days in the country. It's important to have your return flight booked within the initial visa period (60 days) if you're on a tourist visa, although you may adjust your return date later or travel overland.

Can i just get this clear. I arrive from UK on a 60 day tourist visa. I can extend for another 30 days.......So do i book a flight with a return within 60 days or 90 days ? Or is my only option to have a return flight within 60 days and then call the airline and alter the return date for the extra 30 days given? Thanks

I've done it 3 or more time's now. I come and go every 90 days

@Dave *********
just make sure you return by your 90th day or less. You can't stay over 90. Must leave country.

I booked my return flight 90 days nevermind had a problem

I don't know what their rule is in the UK but recently in Australia, the Thai embassy has given the option of either a exit flight within the 60 days or a written explanation as to why you want to stay longer. It wasn't like this before covid. My last 60TR I submitted a exit flight exactly 150 days after my entry flight explaining I was going to do a 30 day extension and 2 border runs. They accepted that and approved my visa. However this is in Australia and written on the Australian embassy requirement list. The UK might be different so best you check

get an onward ticket for under $20 to not have to worry when they ask when you’re leaving.

or you can have no return flight at all and say you're going to travel by land... just saying

they recently approved my 60TR with a exit flight 150 days after entry. I submitted a letter explaining my extension and border run intentions and they approved it. However this has actually been a new option in Australia. Pre covid it was only a exit flight within the 60 days. So the Aussie embassy at the very least realised extensions and border runs were quite inside the rules and have allowed us to explain this intention. May not be the same in the UK though of course

, you have to have a flight booked within the initial 60 days. You can change the date once you are in Thailand

I take it by your question you will be getting a 30 day visa exempt stamp upon your arrival in Thailand, you can only extend that once for 30 days at your local immigration office, it will cost you 1,900 baht. Giving you a total of 60 days in country.
Richard *********
If u enter on a visa exempt ( 30 days ) or tourist visa, ( 60 days) that can be extended ONCE for 30 days /trip!

OR if ur married to a thai 60 day extension/trip
Steve *******
@Richard ********
You dont need to be married to a Thai citizen, you can also get the 60 days extention having a Thai child providing your name is on the birth certificate.

1 years not more then 180 days for tourist visa

@Маркус ****
there is no rule like that in Thailand, for a long time.

Unfortunately, there is... 😏 (been explained that last year by immigration officers in a separate room). There are unofficial rules being put in force by those who have power everywhere here in Thailand.
Brown ********
@Veronika *********
that's true but as you say unofficial rules.

Get a 60 days touristvisa, when you know you want to stay more than 30 days.

60 day tourist visa is cheaper,

no need for onward ticket,

Not using holiday time to find, go-to, and waiting at the Immigration office.

And it look better on your immigration history.

for my 60 days visa, in Thai embassy in Phnom Phen, they ask my flight out of Thailand.

Official guidelines stated on Thai immigration websites are that onward ticket is required.

Many consulates will reject you if you dont have it.

Also, even with a visa approved and in your passport, immigration may reject you on entry if you don't have it.

In July, I was pulled aside at the airport and asked to show proof of finances, onward ticket, and accommodation - which I'd already submitted in Kuala Lumpur to get the visa in the first place.
Henrik *****
You are misunderstanding.

It is when going for 30 + 30 days there can be a need for a onward ticket.

No need for onward ticket with the 60 day touristvisa, if the returnticket is within 60 days.

@Henrik ****
Onward ticket or return ticket amounts to the same thing.

Its now official policy that you have to show a ticket both in and out of the country, though some consulates might be following that guideline less strictly than others.

In Vientiane, for example, they're less stringent about the ticket *into* Thailand, understanding that most tourists will be getting a taxi to the border and then hopping onto a bus or minivan.

However, even at Vientiane, people have been getting turned away for not having a ticket *out* of Thailand (call that ticket whatever you want, it amounts to the same thing).

An onward ticket or a return ticket have the same effect. Immigration aren't bothered where you go afterwards. Don't give out partial or confusing advice. It helps no one.
Brandon ************
@Henrik ****
you can be asked for proof of onward travel for a tourist visa the same as visa Exempt. They are both tourist entries subject to the same requirements
Nigel *********
@Henrik ****
well if you've got a return ticket then yes, you also have an onward ticket

Lots of conflicting info of if you need onward travel when entering thailand on a 60 day visa

I have an onward ticket but it's on 57th day but sometimes I like to extend so rather than leave country and re enter can I just extend again
Henrik *****
If considering to stay longer than 60 days, the advantages get even bigger with 60 days tourist visa, which also can be extended 30 days, which is cheaper than making a visarun.
Henrik *****
OP will go 30 days visa excempt + 30 day extention, then there can be a need for a onward ticket within the first 30 days.

No need for that onward ticket with a 60 day tourist visa, and the visa fee is cheaper than the extension fee.

@Henrik ****
I found it worked out cheaper to get extension in Thailand than to get a tourist visa in home country when considering all the hidden costs ie paying for photo for visa application, courier bag costs to send passport and application to embassy both ways, transport costs to bank to get bank statements signed, photocopy expenses and travel to do that. Works out cheaper to do in Thailand than in an expensive home country like New Zealand. But it does mean a day freed up while on vacation
Henrik *****
In Denmark is the 60 day touristvisa 250 dkk = 1200 baht.

Extension ( 30 + 30days ) at the immigration is 1900 baht,

then you need a onward ticket within the first 30 days.

No need to pay for a foto,

No photocopies,

No need to send the passport or anything else, since the visa come by email, when using

everything is done online.

@Henrik ****
not true... depends on which consulate you are applying to for the 60days tourist visa. For example the Thai consulate in Canada does require onward travel ticket when applying for tourist visa.

Check with your airline as it is they that might need onward travel within 60 days, some do, some do not

If you enter as a tourist (with a 60 day tourist visa or a 30 day visa exempt) then you can apply one time for a 30 day extension. After that, unless you're married to a Thai, you must leave Thailand.

you can also get a 60 day visiting Thai family extension.
