If you enter Thailand on visa exemption and then get a 30 days extension. Can you after that do a border run and get another 30 days or do you need to arrive by air to get 30 days?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is generally possible to do a land border run for an additional 30 days after extending your stay under a visa exemption. However, there's a limit of two land entries per calendar year for visa exemptions. Some users have reported mixed experiences, with one individual stating they were informed by immigration that border runs might no longer be acceptable. Always verify the latest regulations before planning your travel.

I was stopped yesterday at phuket airport immigration and told that border bounce is now illegal and that I only have one 30 day extension left open to me, having used 1 already this calendar year. I enter Thailand visa exempt 3 times per year by air, and have never had any issues or overstay. I am now at a quandary over what I should do as my flight home isn't until January 20th

that's nonsense and you need to NOT trust an immigration officer at the airport as far as what you can or can't do bouncing out and back by land. Border bounce is NOT illegal, and no matter what they tell you when you stamp in there is no official limit of free 30 day stamps entering by air

As long as you haven't done TWO land entries on free stamps in a calendar year you're fine to bounce out and back to get a new 30 day visa exempt entry stamp AND take a 30 day extension on that as well if you want to

sorry what does it me extended the bounce, 30 days + 30 days ? You mean go to immigration and extend ?

most people get in on free 30 day visa exempt entry stamps, that entry can be extended ONE time for 30 days for 1900baht at the immigration office. Then you have to exit/re-enter to get a new 30 day entry stamp

thanks for your info Tod. I was actually quite worried by him yesterday. I have never done a land entry in all my years of coming here or overstayed. I did start an application for a 90 mev but ran out of time to get my stuff together, so I was aware I'd need to do a bounce as I'm in country for 88 days. This has really reassured me thanks again

well if you're going to bounce out and back to get a new free 30 day entry stamp do it by land

Yes you can do a land border hop for another 30 days, which you could then extend for a further 30 days. Be aware that you can only do 2 land visa exempt entries per calendar year.
