Can you get a 45 day visa exemption via a border run / land crossing? I'm currently on my first 45 day visa exemption (flew in from the US in late October) and would prefer to get 45 more days, instead of just 30 days from an extension... so thinking about a border run if that can get another 45 day stamp? I've never done a border run before so not sure how hard it is other than reading about it.

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can obtain a 45-day visa exemption through a border run. After your initial 45 days, you can either extend for 30 days (for a fee) and then do a border run, or simply do a border run after your current visa exemption period to re-enter with another 45-day stamp. It's important to note that border runs by land are limited to twice per calendar year. Consider traveling to a nearby country, like Laos, for the border run.

It's not an either/or thing.

You can get a 30 day extension, then do a border bounce and get another 45 days which you can extend for 30 days.

But the direct answer to your question is yes, you will get 45 days regardless of how you enter Thailand.

Just beware that you can only do visa exempt by land border 2 times per calendar year. It's probably not a factor for you given how close we are to the end of the year, but it's something to be aware of if you decide to make a spontaneous road trip or something.

Thanks, I understand you can do both but I need to return to US for other reasons in Jan, so for me it is either/or... so trying to get the most of this trip by getting 45 more days. Mainly trying to find out if 45 day exemption is available at all border crossings regardless of land or air... and what the most expedient and certain process is.

Yes. Google border run and your city will give u some companies. From Bangkok it's about a 10hr day to get your new stamp.

Thanks, I have tried Google but have seen some info that left me with questions about whether you get 45 day at all borders... I'm closer to Laos (in Loei) and from what I've read so far it seems Thai immigration offices in different provinces might not all be operating with the same rules.

entering Thailand is the same regardless of where you're at, it's just some border stations are assholes. But Laos is the suggested place to go if you will do a land border so you're fine.
