TLDR : Answer Summary
The Thai consulate in Los Angeles does not issue retirement visa extensions; such extensions must be handled at local immigration offices within Thailand. Travelers may consider applying for a new NON-O-A Multi-Entry Visa before returning to Thailand if their current visa will expire before they return. There are instances where extensions can be requested earlier than usual, but this typically requires persistence and may involve escalating the request within the immigration office.

Chiang Mai allows you to apply for a new extension of stay when you have 45 days or less left on your current one.

I know for a fact IF you show up at the immigration office showing you are leaving the country before your current extension expires and show them that you will not be back until after the extension expires you can get a new yearly extension pushed thru.

It takes refusing to take "cannot" as an answer from some low level, paper pushing, passport stamping immigration official :O <- by that I mean you need to be willing to push it up the chain of command as high as it takes to get someone to allow you to do it

BUT

I know it can be done because I was able to assist a friend in getting her yearly extension 86 days early ;)

otherwise, I'd say getting the year-long, multi-entry Non-O-A visa from one of the 4 thai consulates in the US that issue them before you come back would be the way to go .

thanks Tod. Good to know. I am on my 5th year extension of a retirement (non O A) Visa which is definitely cheaper here than getting a new one in LA! Still dealing with dates. My return is the fly in the ointment as its business in the US.

Check out getting the Non Imm O-A Multi-Entry Visa.

Thank you for the prompt responses. Had hoped for different answer. Oh well, new Visa before I leave US. Timing doesnt work out for renewal in Thailand. Headed back to US for several months.

This might turn out to be the best option for me too. Never having to deal with CM immigration and getting a much needed break from the "amazingness" of LOS. Especially if the income stipulation ever change to require bringing (depositing) money into Thailand.

I'm only planning on O-A every 2 years from home country.

Extensions of stay are only issued inside Thailand at your local immigration office.
