Can I apply for a retirement visa to enter Thailand through the Los Angeles consulate?

I'm American. Today, I called the Thai consulate in Los Angeles. They told me I could apply for a retirement visa there successfully, and they would give me a "fit to fly" certificate so I could enter Thailand. They told me I had to buy a plane ticket to thailand on one of four specific plane carriers. Of course, I'd need to buy health insurance and quarantine.

But they assured me that I could enter Thailand.

I've read hundreds of posts from people saying they can't get in, but the Los Angeles consulate says they are issuing many types of visas.

Any comments?

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquired about applying for a retirement visa at the Thai consulate in Los Angeles, mentioning that they were informed of their eligibility and the requirement for a 'fit to fly' certificate, as well as health insurance and quarantine provisions. Various commenters shared their experiences related to visa applications, especially Non-Immigrant O visas, and the differing regulations across Thai embassies. They noted the ongoing complications due to Covid-19, including quarantine and health protocols, but also pointed out that some visas are still being issued, raising a mix of skepticism and hope regarding travel to Thailand.

You’re talking directly to the authorities who are issuing the visa for you, I think you have done the right thing already, no need to second guess this information and ask comments from people who aren’t the competent authorities and don’t possess the official information. You will be fine. As long as your covid test comes out negative you’ll be okay. Please don’t worry and stay positive. I hope all the best for you 🙏😊❤️

As long as you have all the bits of paper its pretty easy if you can arrange your own flight like I did with Emirates. Tge tough bit is all the paperwork.
Suchira *************
Yes, you're right. People can come here by STV visa, non-immigrant O-A and O-X and TR visa (tourist who stay at least 60 days) and others. Good luck !!!
Bo ***********
If they confirmed tongive you the visa so you can come in Thailand and of course there is the way to do retirement visa here.
Steven ******
I spoke to my agency that uses the Thai Embassy in LA as I'm on the wait list for my long stay visa. They will accept your application along with all the paperwork support & fees, but they are not issuing the visas at this time.
Paul ********
They may give you a retirement visa and take your money but a retirement visa atm give you no right to come back here. Sounds like it’s just for the money mate.
Joseph *********
O-A IF you're over 50. Health insurance, income, money in the bank, criminal check, no problem.
Joseph *********
There are a lot of stories though.
Joseph *********
No, sorry. But there is a group for ASQ or just type ASQ in the search on this group.

When the Emirates Commercial planes are full from Dubai to Bangkok then you will know the border is open to everyone. I rest my case.

Looking like there will be a lot of cheap property in Thailand! No demand if people can't travel?

Its a catch 22 I think. No deaths, but no tourists or markets. The government could certainly afford a stimulus package, but wont.

Protecting citizens from Covid at the expence of livelihood and education is not a farangs topic.

It’s true. Since 9 October there has been a new notification for all thai embassies and consulates to issue non immigrant B and TR visas, in addition to the Non immigrant O-A and Non immigrant O-X visa types.

Joke you will not be able to come in Thailand and certainly not American citizens

right, and for good reason . US leads the world in cases and deaths yet only has 4% of people.

Everyone has to remember. Every Thai embassy has the power to make exceptions as they see fit. If the LA consulate told you then at that consulate it is true. That does not mean it is the same at every embassy/consulate.

Bud carefull, on the end the Immigration Officer in Thailand lat you in or not. Witch VISA ever. Same as travel to US.

I’ll be interested in hearing how this goes for you. This is the path I’m hoping to take, but I’ve been waiting a bit to see how things go over the next few months. Please keep us posted.

we're still Covid free. In 10 months 3000 cases, 58 died.

Ahkim ********
the only way this makes sense is if they want to sell the no-visitor narrative to their people while having lowkey decided to let tourists back in for the money.

in essence it's an extension of the last-minute announcement policy to maximize visa agency usage by those already here.
Terry ********
@Ahkim *******
the op is talking about a retirement visa, not a tourist visa.

The price the govt is charging to go thru all these hoops, quarantine is out of control, and that's why very few are not opting for this game. I've been a property owner for over 12 years, myself and others in my complex of 32 units in HuaHin are waiting until the govt hopefully wakes up and start the normal process whenever that might be, sooner than later I hope. Good Luck to anyone that wants to spend the money,,,
Janne ***********
@Kool ******
I realize many people like myself that can afford it, but of principle will NOT spend the money/quarantine time. And when towns like HH where I have a condo like many other Farangs, that is now drowning and businesses closing daily because the normal crowd is not there to spend the money. So please tell me when it flourishes again, because a town like this cannot survive, and all my friends that stayed is saying it is empty. Golf courses are empty, bars and restaurants are either closed or empty, trying to entice the few that are there to come and play for 700-800 baht which certainly does not make places survive. Good Luck to All!
Steve **********
@Rick ******
yes I do. Know people in most provinces, and have an honest thai Dr. It may be off a few percent, ( normal ) but ya
Rick *******
@Kool ******
, even with the published numbers of the cases and deaths in the US, I am in an area that has few of both. Soon I will be going to Arizona to spend the winter that has very low numbers. If I stay low key here in the US, I should be fine. I believe things will continue to get better with regard to total cost of reentry and it is just a matter of time before I return. As for the economy, it will take a long time before Thailand returns to pre Covid-19 numbers and it is up to the government to start opening things up again. Right now they have a major public relations problem.
Rick *******
@Steve *********
, do you believe the numbers that the Thai government is using for coronavirus cases and deaths?
Steve **********
@Kool ******
Its a hell of a lot safer here. Only 3k cases this year with total 58 deaths. Problem is economy.. no more smiles, jobs, or happiness. Thailand in the midst of big political problems ,along with economic.
Steve **********
@Rick ******
What is cost now Rick. ?

This morning, It appears Quarantine may be reduced to 10 days.
Kool *******
@Janne **********
, your thinking doesn't match with all the people asking questions about how to get here, with no qualms at all about quarantine. There are many more people that can afford these hoops than you can even imagine. There are millions of people in most every country that want a safe place to ride out this virus, and can afford it, no matter what the cost.
Rick *******
@Pensom *****
, that doesn't mean that there is some price gouging going on.
Rick *******
@Janne **********
, I am with you on that. I am already allowed in, but am not willing to jump through more hoops and pay the rediculous cost.
Janne ***********
@Pensom *****
what I was saying was that this whole idea is cooked up by the govt, and regardless of who is collecting most of the money, it's price gouging at the highest proportions, and it will not be popular by most people.
Janne ***********
@Kool ******
I'm referring to snow birds coming for 3 months and up to 6-7 months, and not those that are working, school, diplomats etc...22k arriving. With only 5-6 carriers having flown inbound the last 4-5 months is highly unlikely...anyway we will see how it goes...will be interesting to see if popular tourist towns will be flooded by Europeans coming in for 3months and more. I doubt it very much.
Kool *******
@Janne **********
, since June, with type O family visas, work visas, diplomat visas, and a few others, over 22,000 foreigners have come back so far, and went into quarantine. This is much more than "very few", and the number grows daily.
Pensom ******
@Janne **********
sorry but the prices are not charged by government. Only visa fees are charged by government.
Janne ***********

no the $200 is for a processing fee it's $80 for a one-year single entry Visa is even more for a 5-year Visa because it's a multiple entry

I have obtained my Non-Immigrant O multiple entry visa many times from the Thai Consulate in Los Angeles based on marriage to a Thai national. I usually fly back to the US every year to visit family and friends at which time I apply for my visa just before returning to Thailand. I find it much easier than filing for a yearly extension in Thailand. No hassles, no pushback. I just take my passport into the Consulate along with the needed paperwork and pick up my passport the next day which contains the visa. Very easy and organized.
Dianne *****
@Bobby *******
that is correct re the 800K only needed to be shown in your home country bank if using a non immigrant OA visa (aka retirement visa). Perhaps the OP is unaware that this visa can give them a second year at no cost if they leave the country before the first stamp ends. They would only need to buy a re-entry permit at immigration to keep this second year of the visa alive and be able to re-enter on it within a year of leaving
Rick *******
@David ********
, yes as far as I know everyone must have health insurance and do the 14 day quarantine.

I agree with the health minister. Many foreigners to dress dirty and they don’t shower often enough. I’m embarrassed Often when I see foreign men poorly dressed with shabby shorts and disheveled flip-flops, and some cheap dirty shirt. I don’t get it. We don’t all look like that but too many of us do.
Bobby ********
@Stan ******
. Not my views. Just how it is. I live here and talk to the locals. If you can't accept their culture, best you stay away?

Bobby ********
@Stan ******
. Unfortunately due to the carry on your fellow citizens (and the UK is just as bad) with demonstrations and too-frequent public outbursts over lockdown and mask wearing, these two countries are not viewed too favourably by the Thai government. They have their hands full with the pro-democracy student rallies at the moment, the last thing they want to do is let in Brits and Americans who will not follow the restrictions in place here. It's what happens when a whole country is tarred with the same brush. I suggest you just quietly make your application, show the financial criteria, obtain the necessary insurance, book your quarantine, and they will get you to agree that you will follow the government guidelines relating to the covid measures (which are not too heavy now. The worst of it - alcohol ban, businesses closed etc are well behind us, and the locals don't want them reintroduced just because some Farang isn't towing the line!). Good luck - may the force be with you!

OK, I guess I was misinformed.

can get in with an OA visa. Funds of 800,000 equivalent can be shown in a US bank account. Advise once you arrive in Thailand, start the transfer process of 65,000 baht per month into Thai bank account, so the extension can be applied for within Thailand, just in case the restrictions are still in place a year on
Rick *******
@Stan ******
, then you won't be able to get into Thailand right now. You should talk to the Consulate again. Maybe they misunderstood your situation.

it's my understanding that with the LA visa, funds in a USA bank equal to 800,000 baht makes it unecessary to put funds in a Thai bank. Is that correct or not?
Apex ********************
Yeah, this is the 3rd report I've seen today like this. One of the Embassies websites (scotland I think?) updated that they are issuing tourist visas now too.
Tom ********
@Kathy ***************
That's interesting. If you read the requirements for visas on the consulate website, at least if you are a spouse of a Thai national, you have to have proof of purchased plane ticket, proof of paid ASQ hotel and other info before you are told to mail your passport in with some repetitive documents and then are notified they are mailing the visa. Mine is coming from the DC consulate in the mail tomorrow and then I still have to load a copy of the visa to them and then they send the COE document I need. A lot of hoops to jump through. They could make it easier but why do that?
Apex ********************
@Gr**
Tourist visas for the US have the same requirements as they do for Thailand, other than an interview. Tourist visas are also valid for 6 months, extendedable in country up to 1 year.
Paul ********
