TLDR : Answer Summary
The 800,000 THB requirement for extending a retirement visa in Thailand must be held in a Thai bank account in the visa holder's name. It cannot be in an investment fund; a regular savings account is acceptable, as long as the funds can be withdrawn on demand.

I suggest using a fixed term account so you can at least accrue minimal interest. I set mine up with 4 deposits of 200k. That way if I must get some fast cash I need not disturb the entire 800k at once.
the balance can fall below 800k for a limited time. I don't recall exactly but I think it must be 800k for 2 months before your yearly renewal and 3 months after. The other months it can drop. Alo you can do a combination of money in the bank with monthly importation of funds. There must be a formula for that.

The bank account can ONLY be in a Thai bank account in your name only that is withdrawal on demand.
A savings account is acceptable by most immigration offices as long as the 800,000 can be withdrawn on demand. Penalty is loss of accrued interest.
To be sure...ASK your local Thai Immigration office.
