If someone with marriage visa and is already in Thailand visa wants to work in Thailand - what can be done?

This is probably a simple question and I've tried to google and got the following: "The Thailand Marriage Visa also allows the holder to work in Thailand when the visa holder is able to obtain a valid Thai Work Permit to go along with the visa." - does it mean that the work permit should be obtained with the visa and can't be obtained after?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, holders of a Thailand marriage visa (Non-O visa) can work in the country, but they must obtain a valid Thai Work Permit in addition to their visa. The work permit is required regardless of whether the visa holder applies before or after receiving the marriage visa.

and it's not all that thai VISA related guys.

You CAN work on a Non-O visa or extension based on marriage to a thai or raising half thai children or on a Non-B visa (IF you get a work permit). You CANNOT work on a Non-O visa or extension based on being married to another foreigner who legally works here.

Things are simplier: your marriage visa will give you maximum possible freedom (from any job) compared to general Non-B. You may work or not, you may quit job any time w/o affect your visa status at all. Sounds good? Very close to resident permit with one note, it still depends on your marriage status...

Regarding consultant, I not sure as the company which provide WP for you will pay taxes and social security from your salary. So technically you will be employed by some company anyway. Oh, and there is no difference between BOI and MOL companies, any can do WP for you.

I do it like this (I live in Thailand with my Thai wife and have company in my citizenship country). In immigration office they told me that I don't need work permit. I have customers only in my country, so it doesn't affect Thai labour market at all. I extend my stay every year (3 times already), everytime I bring them documents that I have company in my country and they never said a word about work permit.

Application for a work permit requires you to have a suitable Non-Immigrant visa or extension of stay as a prerequisite.

No, it means that in order to work, you need the Work Permit in addition to the “marriage visa”.

There are two different things called marriage visa, but for both it is the same rule: If your employer applies at the Ministry of Labor for a Work Permit and when this work permit is in your possession you can work.

Best is to walk in at your local Ministry of Labor and ask, they will give you the hand out with requirements to apply for the Work Permit. But if you can read Thai, here is the link

Does not matter, your employer visit the Ministry of Labor, applies for the Work Permit with the documents needed. If the Work Permit process is done, you visit the Ministry of Labor, sign and pick it up and than go to work.
