Can I Change My Non-Immigrant O Visa to Have One Spouse as a Dependent?

Thanks for adding me to the group. I find Thai visa regulations to be vague and inconsistently applied, so I need help determining if the following is possible.

My husband and I have had separate non-Immigrant O (retirement) visas for several years. We would now like to change this so that one of us has the visa and the other is a dependent. This would cut the baht we have to keep in a Thai account in half and free up some of our funds. Immigration allowed us to do this one year about 8 years ago, but after that required us to have separate visas. Unfortunately, we never got an explanation for this change.

Is it possible to have a visa in one name with the other party as a dependent today? If so, how do we do this? Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
The poster is seeking clarification on the possibility of changing their separate Non-Immigrant O visas to allow one spouse to have the visa and the other to be a dependent. This adjustment is intended to reduce the financial requirements associated with their visas. Responses indicate that it is possible to have one spouse as the visa holder while the other is a dependent, but advise bringing necessary documentation like a marriage certificate when visiting the immigration office.

Great. So how do I go about changing? Do I just go to immigration with the marriage certificate along with the usual documents needed for extension and explain what I want? Is there some regulation I can show them? Remember, this office refused this arrangement in the past. I use Krabi Office. Thanks

that the office refused the arrangement in the past does NOT mean that it can't be done, just that you didn't push it up the chain of command far enough.

My husband has been a dependent on my Extension of Stay for the last approx 10 years. We deal with Koh Samui Immigration. The only extra paperwork we show is our UK marriage certificate (no longer have to have it certified, but that may be different in other Immigration Offices) & as well as the usual passport photos of each of us, we also show a passport sized photo of both of us together.

yes, one of you can have the visa or after the visa the Extension of Stay based on being over 50 years of age and the spouse can piggyback on this visa using the Non Immigrant O visa or Extension of Stay In the case of being a family member of an alien permitted a temporary stay in the Kingdom

Ken Adams No, the O stands for Other and is a long list of reasons, like Volunteer work, having half Thai Children, marriage to a Thai National or to a foreigner with temporary stay, being over 50 years of age, witness in court and the list goes on
