I just came in on a volunteer o visa and got stamped for 3 months. I was hoping to extend for a year. I have now had a death in the family and may need to go to UK for the funeral for a couple of days. Can I use a re-entry permit and then get back in on the same visa or will I need to get a new visa. My o visa has been crossed out and marked "used" but we did this previously on o visas so I'm confused.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user inquired about the ability to leave Thailand on a Non-O volunteer visa, recently stamped for three months, due to a family death, and whether a re-entry permit would allow re-entry without needing a new visa. Discussion confirmed that a re-entry permit can be utilized for leaving and returning on the same visa before its expiration, despite the recent changes at the WP office regarding work permits.

Whether there's a change or not in the work permit issuing (which seems mostly to be in Chiang Mai right now NOT bangkok) on Non-O volunteer visas. it doesn't change the fact at all that the O/P can get a re-entry permit leave on their current stamp and when they return they'd be stamped in until the expiration of that original 90 day stamp's expiration date.

I guess you don't have any link or information about this 1 hour ago change of Thai law?

Ah, just read your post Cheryl from Friday. You are indeed correct. Hope that impasse is somehow overcome. It seems strange to change one law and not change the other. Reminds of something Yossarian once said :)

Yes, I am confused. But I just went there and that's what they said. Prior to that my WP application was all in order and I was just going to pick up the book today. I'm not sure what to do now. I will get back to you when, or if, I know more. Obviously as he mentioned March 28th, this is related to those above changes.

We had that discussion few days ago, but I can not find the post. These are the changes and nowhere I can read volunteer work permit.

Trust me, I've been looking for the official statement online. Sorry, could not find it. But that's what they said in no uncertain terms, in both Thai and English. Change in law (he said March 28th but looked confused about that date - maybe as he said that in English and could have got month wrong), and the change means no work permits issued. He said I can still volunteer - legally - but as for the extension he just said it's a matter for immigration. Quite amusingly he explained, "No work permit because not actually working." I thought, well, we know that but were just following the law.

I've just been informed of a change in the law, just an hour or so ago at the WP office in Chiang Mai. It's related to extension of stay. You'll need a work permit to extend, although now apparently the new law means they cannot issue that permit. I asked them what to do about this and they said ask immigration.

How does this have anything to do with the fact that the O/P posted they're here on a 90 day Non-O visa need to leave and come back and asked if they can get a re-entry permit to keep their 90 day stamp alive? :/

Yes thanks James, I am aware of this and made an earlier post on here about it. I am still trying to work this out longterm but this question was a short-term one.

With the re-entry permit you can leave and come back before 7 Oct 2018 and get this same date as Admitted to Stay on return.
