Here’s a question I’ve always wondered if you first come to Thailand on a retirement visa then married a Thai could you change your visa to a marriage visa or if you found online work at a later date change to a DTV visa?

Or is it once you’re on a retirement visa you can’t ever go back and change if your circumstances change?

TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, you can change your visa status in Thailand. If you initially enter on a retirement visa, you may switch to a marriage visa or a DTV (Digital Nomad) visa later. To change your visa, you will typically need to leave Thailand without a re-entry permit, which effectively cancels your current visa status, and then apply for the new visa type upon re-entry. Additionally, while on a retirement visa, you can change the reason for your yearly extensions—you can switch from retirement to marriage, provided you meet the requirements. However, it is advisable to consider the implications of switching visas, as different visas come with varying security levels and requirements.

You don't change visas but you change the reason of extensions of stay from retirement to marriage....I am married to a thai but I still hold on to nonO (retirement) with less paper work and get stamped on the same day instead of getting a consideration stamp and wait for the house visit in order to get the actual stamp.....each to its own just work with what is best for you

If you already have a Visa for Thailand, never ever change to a marriage Visa. Because after the marriage has run its course, your stay in the country is now dependent on a moody female. Why would anybody want to subject themselves to that kind of trouble?

You can do all of these things. The question is do you want to? if you have a retirement visa and keep the $800,000 baht in the bank you get to stay every year. when you start shifting to other types of visas then things get less secure. DTV is a great example. what happens if your school jacks up their rates? what happens if you and your lady are no longer together? You're going to have to shift which means possibly leaving the country, so if you are eligible for the strongest visa why not get it and keep it?

You can change any time you want by leaving without a re-entry permit, which will cancel whatever stay you are on. Then you can apply for a new visa.

If you get a retirement visa and then get a yearly extension, you can switch reasons for that extension at the end of one of your years, from retirement to marriage.

Leaving would be the only way to switch to DTV, but realistically there's no point in switching to a DTV if it's just for remote work. Just do the remote work and don't blab about it to everyone. No one will care really. There are plenty of people doing remote work on tourist visas, retirement visas, marriage visas, etc.
