Can I switch my visa extension from employment to marriage without canceling my current non-B visa?

Hello everyone. I have a question about my visa. I don't know if it's possible because I've seen conflicting information online. I currently have non b based on employment. I have to do my one year extension next month. Would it be possible to change the reason for my extension to be based on marriage instead of employment? I don't want to cancel my visa to change because I'd like to apply for citizenship soon, but I would like to have the marriage visa for the time being. Thank you all for your responses and advice.

Update: Update for everyone. Went to CW. They said I could do it but I can't use the 40k a month requirement. I have to have 400k in the bank two months prior. I don't have the 400k so I won't be doing it this time around but I appreciate everyone's help. Thank you.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The user has a non-B visa based on employment and is inquiring if they can change their visa extension reason to marriage instead of employment. They are concerned about the implications for their future citizenship application. Community members advise visiting the immigration office for accurate information and suggest it might be possible to apply for a new extension based on marriage without canceling the current one, provided the two applications are processed back-to-back. However, there's confusion regarding financial requirements; the user learned that a bank balance of 400,000 THB is needed for the marriage extension, which they do not currently have.

Ah okay. Maybe that's why I got the weird response. I'll probably prepare my documents according to the paper and give it a try there. Thank you again!

do you mean you cannot use your monthly income (more than 40K per month based on contract/workpermit and other documents) in Thailand based on employment as the proof of fund?

What is your nationality?

@Ellie ******
they said for the first one I have to have the 400k even though I've had a work permit and made over 40k per month for over three years. I'm from the US.

that makes NO sense at all. There is nothing in the regulations that says you can't go onto a marriage extension from an extension based on employment using monthly income method (from a legal job here) when the extension comes up for renewal. :/

Did you talk to the people at Counter L (the section that does marriage, retirement, raising children?). They are the ones you'd be dealing with.

yeah. Talked to an officer at L1. They said since it's my first one I needed the 400k. Even though on the paper they gave me it says otherwise. My wife went with me and translated so there wasn't a problem. It makes no sense to me too haha.

@Jay ****
NOT the officers in Section L-1 <- that's the section where you pick up your "results" (get the year extension inked in after the 30 day under consideration stamp)

You wanted to talk to the officers in regular section L

As has been pointed out, you might have to cancel the extension based on employment for the officer to stamp in the new extension based on marriage (because it's for a different reason) BUT that shouldn't be a problem and as long as it's all done at one time cancel the extension and immediately apply for a new one it won't hurt your time line for PR or thai citizenship as far as unbroken extensions.

thank you thank you. That's the important part for me. I don't want to start over for citizenship haha. If it's gonna mess that up then I'll just keep everything as is.

@Jay ****
as I said IF it's done the same day one right after the other, cancel your existing extension based on employment and immediately apply for the extension based on marriage it won't affect you.

got it. Thank you. I'll make sure it's the same day so there's no gap. That's why I'm preparing early haha. I can stay until last day of July. Getting all the info I need now.

Yes.

In March I switched to a marriage visa from having a Non B. Immigration could not cancel my extension of stay as I could not leave the country. Therefore my passport now reads Thai wife/ Non B visa. Unless, you leave the country Jay, immigration as far as my visa reads can't cancel your existing Non B. This was at my immigration office in Korat, I doubt ever office acts the same though ...
Ellie *******
@Karl *******
, were you on the first 90days from your Non-B visa or you were on an extension based on employment that you applied for before you changed the reason in March?
Karl ********
@Ellie ******
I was on an extension based on employment for the last year, for the same school for 3 consecutive years prior to the change.

okay thank you for sharing your experience. Gives me some hope.

I'd certainly head over to your immigration office with your thai wife and get the hand out of what's required to apply for a yearly extension based on marriage to a thai (using income earned in thailand as the means of proof of funds) because it's a pile 'O paperwork, from your employer, tax records, etc and all the marriage documents and photos too

I do not believe you'd have to cancel this extension just apply for a new yearly extension for a different reason

sharing my personal experience .

You need to cancel Non B extension first from counter M. Requirements for cancallation are

Work permit, passport, DBD updated from employer with closing accounts, last 3 months personal income tax slips, SSC paid proof, letter from employer to switch cancel extension.

Before going to counter M better consult L and clearly discuss what exactly you want. Officers were totally confused whether to cancel Non B first or not. There was a hell confusion between the departments due to which i was overstayed..

Being employer myself i clearly mentioned in application letter that i only want to switch from NON B to Non O and carry on with work permit . They force me to cancel non b which i think was totally non sense

You would NOT be on a Non-B or a Non-O visa; you would be on an extension of stay based on employment, and you would be going to an extension of stay based on marriage to a Thai national. The word "visa" may confuse the Thai immigration officers.
Salman ******
@Benjamin *****
may be the word visa verbally confused them. Officers throughly checked documents at counter L and M both. Application letter clearly mentioned to switch extension of stay from Non B to Non O. Officer at M counter was with oponion no need to cancel at all. Counter L was not ready to extend without a cancalltion stamp from counter M.

Within departments not a clear guidance.
Tod *********
@Sal***
quite strange that counter M said no need to cancel it, but over at counter L they didn't wanna issue the new extension until you'd cancelled the extension based on employment

Are you on a non-b VISA at the moment?
Lloyd ********
Then you are on an extension and not a visa

READ your stamp in your passport and I bet dollar to durian you will see it says EXTENSION OF STAY PERMITTED UNTIL with a date you're allowed to stay. That's NOT a visa that's an extension of stay.

yes I understand that and it was thankfully clarified why it's important to differentiate the two in another part of this thread. Thank you.
