Ok. So I think I know the answer but I want to check. I’m currently on an extension of stay on my Non O for retirement. When I apply for my next extension of stay Can I change that to a non O for marriage or do I have to start again. Thanks

TLDR : Answer Summary
You can change your extension of stay from a Non-O for retirement to a Non-O for marriage when you apply for your next extension, provided you meet the necessary requirements for the new visa category. It is essential to ensure that you have the appropriate financial documentation and that you are applying within the correct timeframe to avoid any complications. Previous experiences suggest that many immigration offices allow such a switch, though it can vary by location, and it’s always best to follow the specific guidelines provided by your local immigration office.

I will be married the time before I get my retirement visa. In this case what do I do with my 12 monthly payments from my retreat. Do I have to pay the 400k or the 12 consecutive months is enough. My Embassy can confirm the monthly payments

for an application to the 1-year extension based on being married to a Thai wife, you need the marriage registered inside Thailand because you need the marriage registry printout on Immigration. If you got married outside of Thailand, you must get your marriage acknowledged in Thailand first. Immigration offices do not accept the rose bordered marriage certificate as proof (because you theoretically could be divorced)

Oh, the meaning was to get married at the end of the 2026 in Thailand. Then after a last time coming back to my country, I want to install as a retirement as married couple. Thus my question is do I have to pay 400k or 12 or more consecutive prove of my retirement 65k or not. TKS a lot

Change to based on marriage no issue as has been posted already.

Note that your 12 month extension will start from when you apply as you are changing the reason what the extension is based on.

No big deal however if existing renewal date is preferred then apply late..

Not eg 45 days prior.

The answer is yes but I can only speak from my experience in my province of Nakhon Ratchasima. I was in the same situation last month. I arrived October 2024 and received a 90 day Non-O based on retirement and a one year extension of stay stamp all through an agent in Bangkok using their funds. From the moment I received my bank account (Krungthai) I faithfully deposited a minimum of ฿70,000 via Wise on the first of every month. All year long I read post after post about the problems of being on the “agency hamster wheel“ and was concerned about my extension renewal, especially being from the US and not being able to get an embassy certification for my retirement pensions. In July, my fiancé and I were married, and I soon decided to pursue switching the extension stay from retirement to marriage.

End result… just received my final extension and reentry stamps on Christmas Eve. Everything went even smoother than I hoped. The first trip to receive my 30 day “under consideration” stamp only took a half day at immigration including the very easy process of getting my statements and bank letter that morning at Krungthai bank. Also the home visit which they did that same week went very smoothly and actually was an enjoyable experience. Going back this week on the 24th for my final stamp was only slightly delayed because of the amount of people at immigration.

My suggestion to anyone (marriage or retirement) is to make sure you follow the list of items needed which you receive from your immigration office “to the letter” and more is always better than not enough when it comes to the supporting documents. I provided monthly statements from my US bank showing my military retirement and Social Security deposits as well as the monthly transfers via Wise. I highlighted each deposit and transfer (color coded by type) to make it very easy for them to see. I think this was helpful and appreciated by the IO officer. I also provided the online statements of benefits from both the military and Social Security accounting offices. They never asked for any certification from my embassy.

Again, I say this knowing that every provincial immigration office is different but want you to know what you asked is possible because I just did it in Nakhon Ratchasima. Best of luck to you and feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

Nongnuch, I understand exactly what you are saying and believe me, I have been really dreading this renewal. I had all kinds of contingency plans in mind if it didn’t work out but fortunately everything worked out perfectly, Especially being able to continue with my monthly deposits vs the full ฿400k deposit. I have nothing but high praise for not only all the people we dealt with at immigration but also Krungthai Bank. I was anticipating all kinds of possible problems since the agency opened my account in Bangkok, but again very smooth and painless. Thanks for your continued comments and insights , they have always been helpful understanding the system and possible pitfalls. All my best for a happy and healthy new year.

you have been VERY lucky because when the agent removed the funds after you got issued the 1-year extension. You violated the requirements for the upkeep of the deposit, which theoretically put you into "overstay" at the very moment the agent removed the funds. You can call yourself REALLY LUCKY. The Korat Immigration seems to be a bunch of jolly fellows meaning to do no harm to you. You violated a few rules and got away with it. All I can say is a loud and clear WOW!

When your current extension of stay is due for renewal you can switch to marriage assuming you meet the criteria. If you are currently using the 800k baht method it should be no problem as you have to meet the criteria for your current extension anyway which means you will have the 400k baht for the marriage extension anyway. But if you are using monthly transfers you need to be aware that not all immigration offices allow this for an extension based on marriage.

What if I submit eVisa Non O 90 days and never mention I am married to a Thai national? That is what I did and got that eVisa.

As long as you are currently on an extension based on retirement, there's no problem with applying for the next extension based on marriage instead. You just need to make sure that you meet the requirements for the new extension.

The people that have an issue are the ones that enter on or purchase a 90-day non-O visa based on retirement, and then decide they want to do the extension based on marriage instead (or vice-versa). They cannot do that because the first extension from a visa must be based on the same reason the visa was issued.

Dear Brandon.

Here the I.O told me that an EoS after the 90 days NON-O can be on Retirement or marriage. I asked if he sure? Answer you have a NON-O Stamp for 90 days in your Passport. Your E-Visa was for the border. 😅🙄

as a general rule your first extension must be for the purpose your Non-O was issued.

thx for your reply.

But I'm a bit confused. The purpose is the Visa type on your E-Visa isn't?

And on the actual permission to stay that you receive, it will, as the IO pointed out, only state “Non-O” without specifying the underlying basis.

The basis on which you apply is listed under “remarks” here in Thai, but it is not always entered.

Several people have managed to switch directly from a Non O visa to an extension of stay on a different basis. All Immigrations does not seem to be as strict about this as before, which may be related to the fact that the e-visa system is now more standardized and the specific basis for the visa (retirement or marriage) is not always stated on the visa itself.
