TLDR : Answer Summary
Yes, it is possible to change a Non-O visa based on retirement to a non-O visa based on marriage without leaving Thailand. However, while you cannot convert the initial visa type directly, you can change the reason for your extension of stay from retirement to marriage, provided you meet the necessary requirements. Some immigration offices may find this process complex, so it's advisable to check with your local office for specific guidance.

Important to get semantics right here. You cannot convert an initial Non O visa based on retirement to a Non O visa or extension based on marriage.

However I believe you may well be referring to the stamp that you have in your passport saying “extension of stay”. If that’s the case then you can indeed change the reason for an extension of stay from one reason to another if you have the requirements to do so.

normally only while applying for a 2nd or subsequent extension. Don't think it can be done mid extension

Yes. Didn’t qualify that. Assumed the OP was at or near the end of their extension rather than mid way. But you’re correct you can only switch when you would normally be allowed to extend for the same reason.
