Hello! My husband and I have a 1 year Retirement visa based on 65k monthly deposits. We renewed our visas in April 2026 and the next renewal will be in April 2027. We are considering to switch from the 65 k monthly deposits to the 800k money in the bank.

Hello! My husband has a 1 year Retirement visa based on 65k monthly deposits and I have one as a dependent/spouse. We renewed our visas in April 2026 and the next renewal will be in April 2027. We are considering switching from the 65 k monthly deposits to the 800k money in the bank.

If we deposit the 800k now, can we stop bringing the monthly 65k at any time now and safely be able to renew our visa in April 2027?

Thank you for your answers!
Summary so far
The original poster inquires about switching their retirement visa from a requirement of monthly deposits (65k) to a bank deposit of 800k, specifically questioning if they can stop the monthly deposits after making the 800k deposit and still successfully renew their visa in April 2027. The conversation involves numerous comments, debating the feasibility of opening a Thai bank account with a tourist visa (DTV), the complexities surrounding banking regulations in Thailand, and conflicting experiences of individuals regarding account openings under different visa statuses.

How much money does a DTV holder actually save by having a Thai bank account?

Honestly, probably not that much.

If a shop accepts Wise or another international card, the saving is close to zero. Your foreign currency still needs to be converted into Thai baht, whether you pay directly with Wise or transfer the money to a Thai bank account first.

The main financial advantage is avoiding the Thai ATM fee, which is usually around 220 baht per withdrawal, plus any additional Wise fee once you exceed your monthly allowance. Depending on how often you withdraw cash, a Thai account might save approximately:

- Mostly card payments: 0–300 baht per month

- Occasional ATM withdrawals: 400–800 baht per month

- Frequent cash withdrawals: 800–1,500 baht per month

However, tourists and DTV holders can also use the KBank PAY&TOUR prepaid card with TAGTHAi Easy Pay. It supports PromptPay QR payments and free cash withdrawals at KBank ATMs, although the card generally needs to be topped up with foreign cash at a KBank exchange booth.

So if someone pays an agent 10,000–20,000 baht to open a Thai bank account, it could take years to recover that cost—and for someone who mainly pays by card or uses TAGTHAi, it may never pay for itself.

A Thai bank account is undoubtedly more convenient for local transfers, rent payments, QR payments and ATM withdrawals. But for most DTV holders, it seems to be more about convenience than any significant financial saving.

Am I missing something? What financial benefit does a Thai bank account provide that Wise and PAY&TOUR with TAGTHAi Easy Pay cannot reasonably replace? Just asking.

No law bans opening a Thai bank account on a DTV or tourist visa. However, strict KYC/anti-money-laundering rules mean branches can reject you at their own discretion. I posted a list of suggested documents in another blog you can go see it

Read my comment again, Phil. The official visa classification isn't the point. There is no statutory law banning tourist/DTV account openings. Banks reject them based on internal branch-level KYC discretion.
LongTimeLivi************
LongTimeLivi************
@Phil *****
I read through the article. They use phrases like "policy shift," "effectively excluded," and "not branch-level discretion, it is policy." Nowhere in the article do they state that a statutory law was passed banning tourist or DTV holders from opening accounts. It is a coordinated risk-management and compliance push driven by the Bank of Thailand and AMLO in response to the mule account crackdown. The banks themselves adopted strict internal policies that weed out short-stay and DTV applicants, but policy is not statutory law. Good discussion though👍

I would try Bangkok Bank, or any other Bank at the Immigration center. (Immigration Division 1) Chang Wattana. They have good English speaking staff, and if you need a Certificate of Residency, you get it right there, too.

Ignore the nay sayers. There is no rule that you can not get a bank account on DTV or Tourist Visa. They are just parroting stuff they have heard here and there - look at them: most post anonymous, lolz.

Just yesterday one reported here, he successfully opened one, himself.

Many statements unfortunately do not correspond to reality. I had my DTV visa translated into Thai by a recognized translation agency with a stamp and also inquired at numerous bank branches; each branch and bank decides independently! A little off the beaten tourist track, it's no problem, otherwise you have to find an agency that can also do it.

ok last word on this because you are clearly a little unstable. I live in Thailand without a bank account and it causes me zero issues. I know many people that do the same. It is fact that you can live in Thailand without a bank account, what's so difficult to understand. Believe it or not I was trying to help you, to say it is impossible as you are clearly having some issues. I would happily explain how I organise myself without one but maybe not now. Obviously you are a little self obsessed, like all people with fragile egos, and thought I literally meant YOU, rather than a general statement. Clearly English isn't your first language so I'll put it down to that. As for the banking point you are simply wrong. It would take you 2 seconds to fact check it. Here's some help for you.....

what is wrong with you? All I have said is that you can live in Thailand without a Thai bank account (I do, and it is easy) and if you had half a brain then you would see that there are some advantages of not having a Thai bank account. And I never said anything specific about Revolut - all I said was that there is not a general rule in British banking that says you cannot live abroad - I have no doubt Revolut do what you say (I do not have a revolut account). Idiots like you do my head in - tell me to stop talking about things I know nothing about when you haven't even read what I have said. Good luck with being a banker....

Ohh yes if you want to pay quadruple fees everytime you withdraw the money... sure it's "easy".

And of course it's true. Make a revolut account and there is a agreement that you have to notify them when you change your residency within 90 days. Stop talking about things u have no clue about. They will close your account without blinking.

"If you move your residence to Thailand, Revolut says you need to close your account because Thailand isn’t currently a supported country."

It's only Wise that will allow you to be a resident in Thailand but they have no paid levels and fees/limits are just horrendous.
