Can my father return to Thailand and secure a new retirement visa despite financial limitations and health insurance issues?

Long post, but please help a stressed but caring daughter out 🙏🏼

My dad (73) has been living in Thailand on various visas and using agents for about 6 years, so he's not new to it all.

He let his retirement visa go well over a year ago (maybe more) and has been on 90 day runs in and out, plus 6 months in the UK last year.

When he went back to Thailand at Christmas he had a warning (I think) about too many trips in and out. He's since left for a bit and travelling about but doesnt like it and wants to get back to Thailand.

Can he at some point soon or end of the year go back and start the 90 days visa trips for a period of time?

Also he thinks he can start again with getting a new retirement visa with an agency BUT he doesn't meet criteria of lump sum in the bank (I know theres companies).

Also he doesn't meet criteria of minimum income of £1500 a month.

Also he has no health insurance and probably cant afford it.

Is he flogging a dead horse, so to speak? 😂

Can he navigate around everything to continue living in Thailand if he takes a 6 or 12 month break away?

Thanks if you've got this far, I just don't want him to eff it up and leave me sorting it all and housing him back here in UK

TLDR : Answer Summary
The post discusses a daughter's concern for her 73-year-old father, who has struggled with maintaining a proper visa status in Thailand after letting his retirement visa lapse. He has been making 90-day runs in and out but received warnings from immigration. The daughter is seeking advice on whether he can return to Thailand and navigate the visa requirements, highlighting his inability to meet financial conditions for a new retirement visa and the absence of health insurance. Multiple comments provide insights on the complexities of Thailand's visa system, suggesting it may be difficult for him to get back to Thailand without proper funds and insurance.

***Update time***

First of all thank you to everyone who has replied, even the ones who have misunderstood my reasons and think I'm a horrid 🐮 😂

My dad has thought things through and has decided on coming back to the UK for around a year as his main health issue is knee replacement surgery is desperate. He's already on list for it. So we (me and siblings) are sorting him an apartment, making all the arrangements and doctors appointments, sorting furnishings and finances. We will take him to all necessary appointments, support him back to health after knee surgery. After all that he plans to go back to Thailand for good. May take a little more than a year, he might get lucky and take less time. We will fully support him with return to Thailand. I'm even looking into seeing if we can get his Thai partner over for a few months on a visit. We'll probably help with flight costs too.

So yes, what a self centred selfish daughter I am 😂😂

Also I'll be running my business, looking after my young children with additional needs, trying to find time for my husband and maybe even sticking a brush up my arse whilst Im at it 🤣

Thank you to everyone for helping me understand that he can definitely, for the right price, pick up his retirement visa again when he's back 🙏🏼♥️

PS, I'll likely be asking at some point how I can get his Thai partner over for a few months, so strap in hahaha. She's cared for my dad for a long time and I think it would be lovely if we could repay that by having her visit England

Stressed_daughter_123getting her to UK could be very easy or a pain, every circumstance is different but go for the six month tourist visa. Approval is mainly based on being funded whilst here and the UK govt being happy that she will return and not overstay. The more reasons she has to go back to Thailand the better the chance, so own house, job, kids, parents etc are all a help.

Proof of accommodation here in the UK and enough money to stay is crucial.

Good luck and your dad is a lucky man to get so much help.

I have friends that do 6 months in their home country and 6 months in Thailand. It works for them. But in reading your post, the biggest issue is staying in Thailand with no insurance. This is a terrible plan. If something happens, hospital bills could wipe out all of the family's money. I see it happen more than you would think.

If the money runs out, I've heard they will put the patient under "minimal care".

John Roche 😂😂😂😂 Honestly please read it all again thoroughly. I'm doing all I can to help him get things right.

This is EXACTLY me taking care of him. If I wasn't arsed then I wouldn't have spent hours on here knowing I'll get a roasting for essentially asking if her can get around staying in Thailand illegally.

What i don't want is him rocking back up at the airport and getting denied entry. If he CAN get away with getting back in then I'm over the moon for him. What I don't want is him effing it up and landing back home because he'll be devastated and also obviously it will be difficult for me too.

Just to add, my decent life that I have has been completely self funded from myself being self sufficient in my own house from the of 17 without any financial support.

I knew I'd get replies like this at some point and still here sticking my neck out to help my dad enjoy his retirement 🙂

so at the end of your post you say basically this is all about you. the father that raised you and and spent an awful lot of money sending you school clothing you feeding you and worrying about you now has a daughter that doesn't really care about him really just wants him to go away easily so she doesn't want to have to deal with it anymore. that's what this world has come to.

sounds like he cannot afford to live in Thailand. He's better off than Laos or Vietnam. that's advice to him not you.

Bob Fom please read the reply I wrote to John Roche above.

I've clothed myself from the age of 14, had no financial support from any parent since age 16 and had my own home and bills from the age of 17. I absolutely adore my dad and will do anything to help and support him. Thats why I'm on here asking you lot. I dont want to trip him up, I want him to be happy. Currently his knees are fked, he's messed up his finances and he needs whatever support works for long time 🙂

so it's up to you to decide whether or not you owe him anything. if you do then do. if you really don't then walk away and let him do himself what he needs to do.

Unless he sorts out some sort of visa or fast track entry via an agent before he goes to Thailand, he’s in danger of being refused entry and being forced to return to the UK, if he tries to enter visa exempt. Will he have 20,000 baht or equivalent in cash to show Immigration and a also a return ticket?

If he won’t listen to reason, you need to draw a line in the sand for your own sanity. Give him a reality check and start calling him ‘Cheap Charlie’ when he mentions Thailand. Mention ‘No money. No honey!’ How much can he save over 6 months on a state pension? Does he have private pension income? You mentioned that he has health issues too? What are they? Thailand has no obligation to take care of chronically ill expatriates and they won’t.

I imagine from what you say that he’s going to be a nightmare to the end and will play the tug at your heartstring’s card constantly. In the UK he’d eventually end up in a care home whether voluntarily or through medical and legal process. Much cheaper to sort out the Power of Attorney option now than wait until it has to be decided through legal process!

It is possible to get a 'retirement visa' without the 800k but will cost 20-30k each year... Some immigration offices will do this without an agent.

He needs to get back onto a ‘Retirement Extension’. Given his financial situation, that means paying an agent each year. Lots of people do exactly the same.

Cost will depend on if he has a Thai bank account and which bank it is with. Bangkok Bank is no longer an option for agents.

Assuming he is allowed in at the airport on Visa Exempt he can then go to an agent and they will sort things out.

If he doesn’t have a suitable bank account then the initial cost will be

baht depending on agent.

Subsequent years will be much cheaper. Maybe

I don't blame him for keeping trying to stay, I would be doing the same.. but better if he went down the agent path to get an 'o' visa then an extension for retirement. There are some good agents that will help I'm sure..good luck to him. As for health protection pay as you go at a government hospital I have found is a very good option.

We've ended on the agreement of if he wants to come back then he can present as homeless and elderly and knackered. Get housed, sort himself out and if he can save to go back again then thats his choice. (We will of course sort him out when he gets home, but also if he wants to come back again for 6 months then he needs accommodation and to take some responsibility).

Tell him to go to Phnom Penh Cambodia for a couple of weeks and try that out..

Not a great deal different to Thailand and they have some better long term visa options..

He may even be able to get a 12 months business visa or even retirement visa much cheaper than Thailand...

But he needs to go and look at his options..

Cambodia slightly better value than Thailand as well if he is getting tight on money..

If he can in some way pull it off (he will need an agent to fiddle the visa requirements for a retirement visa again but they exist and they will do it) then let him go.

We can’t judge how anyone should live their last years.

A lot of less wealthy elderly people do it without health insurance u fortunately. It might not be wise but again, they’d rather be there and accept it might come to an end at some point than be here and miserable for a few years longer so I can get it. It’s far from ideal but I get it.

it's the visa runs that hes messed up with I've now realised. Seems things have changed and he's not up to date with exactly what's best, hence me delving into everything. He's happy to live a budget lifestyle, he's been in Thailand for 6 years, 8 in total if I include the 3 month stints before he went for good.

I'd rather have him at home now but that's mainly because his health is bad and he's just been over for 6 months to live with us and save money to go back. He returned to Thailand in Nov, now he's in Vietnam and asking to come home and live rent free for another 6 months to re fund his dream.

Fine as a one off but we cant support his lifestyle for him

Retirement Visa there is no requirement for insurance. I am considerably younger and just started my retirement in Thailand a few years ago. . My wife is Thai but she uses the Government insurance. I have been uninsured for 3 years now. I plan on getting insurance shortly but have been fairly healthy Thank God. I heard many stories about having insurance and the Insurance companies not paying. This makes me leary about getting it. I have a friend from my hometown who lives here and asked him about it. He is self insured . He has been here way longer than I have. Ok the 1100gbp = ฿47,640.78 currently. A visa based on married requires ฿40,000 per month in the first 12 months for a 2nd years extension.

That's an opportunity.

Or tries the ฿800,000 agent pathway. So he needs to make contact.

It's very unlikely he can get away with just leaving and returning every 90 days on visa exempt entries, especially considering he's already had a warning. Even if he could show the £1500 per month to apply for a 90 day Non-O visa outside Thailand and then return he would need to show 800k baht in a Thai bank to get a 12 month extension. If he can get himself back into Thailand on a visa exempt stamp or even a tourist visa then he could try talking to an agent about sorting out a 90 day Non-O visa and a 12 month extension of stay but he will need finances for that too. At the end of the day he's going to have to have finances to live in Thailand

thank you 🙂

He'd previously renewed his old retirement visa several times with help from an agent for the 800k in the bank bit.

What I really need to find out is, can an agent help with covering the requirement of £1500 a month income?

Also can an agent help with covering the health insurance requirement?

I absolutely appreciate this is a ridiculous question, he's hanging on to something he can no longer afford AND he's an idiot for not having health insurance.

Just he's coming home for a bit and is absolutely convinced he can go back to Thailand at the end of the year and wriggle around all of the above with the help of an agent

Stressed_daughter_123 I don't think you understand what agents do. It doesn't matter how much his income is. The agents will not be using that. The agents will put 800,000 baht into his bank account, get a letter from the bank, then get the money back. Then they pay the immigration office to ignore the fact that the 800k wasn't in the account for the required amount of time. This is what the payment to the agent covers. But the price has gone up significantly since last year. For getting a new non-O visa and 12-month extension, he's looking at 40,000+ baht. The annual extensions after that will be a little cheaper, but it's still going to cost him.

What i need to know is, will they magically be able to also skirt over the fact that he doesn't meet the £1500 a month income and the health insurance?

He's an absolute pecker for not having insurance and I hate to be on here being 'one of those people' asking how to take the piss.

Only ONE single type of visa requires insurance, and that's the non-OA visa. Agents do not deal with non-OA visas as they are ONLY available from the Thai embassy in your home country.

Also can you imagine the conversation. "Hi there Embassy people. My dad is trying to stay in your country in a non above board manner. Can you please advise how best to get around your countries laws and regulations?"

I know it's a joke, I don't approve either, but he's my dad so 🤷

Marian Adamovich they are looking for solutions to a bit of a complicated visa issue. The embassy won't have time to chat or come up with ideas.
