Quick Question. I have booked a return flight to UK, with a stay in Thailand for 88 days. I needed to submit flight details onto the Non-O visa application. I have not had this visa approved yet and IF rejected, can I travel on a 60 day tourist visa and then extend the extra 28 days at immigration, given that they will see on entry that my return flight is 'Outside' the 60 day visa free period.

Flight booked 21st September. Hope that makes sense and Thanks in Advance.
Answer summary
The user inquires about the possibility of switching to a 60-day tourist visa if their Non-O visa application is rejected, given that they have a booked return flight to the UK after an 88-day stay in Thailand. Comments suggest that while traveling on a 60-day tourist visa or visa exemption is possible, proof of onward travel is essential, and airlines may deny boarding based on exit dates beyond the visa period. Many users shared their experiences, indicating common practices and possible concerns about immigration queries regarding travel history and visa applications.

Many get away with it some don't. Both the airline and immigration can see your departure dates so you may get away with both, one or neither. Book a cheap throwaway.

Why everyone chooses 88 ? Because the max is 90 and leeway? Or something else? (Cheaper flights?)

If rejected and you have time put in for a 30 day tourist asap. Can always book a throw away ticket to say Laos then get the 30 extension.

Rumours are they are announcing visa exemption back to 30 days this week.

You can do it and may get away with it - many do.

But, your onward travel should be within the first 60 days.

Airlines can be particularly picky with this as they carry the cost if you are immediately deported.

For the non O (for retirement) you don’t need an onward ticket. So, you’re fine if that is granted.

What is really important, and you haven’t stated this, is your recent travel history to Thailand. If you have been a frequent visitor with long stays then you may be better off getting the SETV; it’s not guaranteed but may be stronger than visa exemption. The same 60 days still applies for onward travel.

OP
Ralph Tyson Thanks Ralph. I have been visiting for the last few years, but usually for the 60 day E-visa free period and have ALWAYS departed within the 60 days. Have never extended beyond and think only 1 trip per year, although perhaps twice in one of the years.

Leigh Griffiths Basically, if you have a history of frequent and long (60 days is long) visits you may not be deemed to be a tourist. Just need to be aware of this as it can be a problem if you try to enter as a tourist.

Leigh Griffiths "the 60 day E-visa free period" do you mean a visa or visa exempt as this does not make sense

Yes, probably

Your Non-O will not be rejected if you are over 50 and have the financial proof (>=B800k or B65k/month income).

Graham Seal it might if the photo I submitted does not meet their requirements. I realise that would be my fault, but I took a selfie and tried to get AI to put a white background in, adjust the size to the 4cmx6cm required and it didn't do a great job.

Travelled from Paris to Bangkok last January with a return 88 days later with the intention to extend by 30 days. Never questioned at Paris or Bangkok.

John Mozley Non-O Retirement Visa. Just worried that there could be a rejection of my Visa submission and not enough time to resubmit before departure, so thought I could switch to E-visa (60 days) and extend (30 days), if rejected and reapply when I return to the UK in December.

Leigh Griffiths A tourist visa and Non-O are both eVisas and you can't switch having made an application

Graham Seal If they reject the Non-O Retirement Visa before the 21st, when flight booked, then I should be able to submit for 60 day Visa free entry?

Ralph Tyson Please explain? Why you get 60 days on arrival? Yes !! Can you get 30 day extension? Yes !! I got my 60 days before I left Australia sent them a copy of my air tickets so why am I lucky ?

Lynnette Munoz surely the return ticket is proof of intending to leave.

Peter Cox yes but technically he is overstaying the 60 day visa free allowance, all you need is a “jobsworth” at LHR and you’re in trouble, call EVA and check, maybe they’ll accept the explanation, maybe not and an “onward ticket “ is required. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

David Goose I was only replying to a comment. How do people that want to tour around the region with no set plans within the 90 days be catered for. Would a METV be the appropriate way to do it.
Ralph *******
Ralph *******
Peter Cox But it must be in the first 60 days. If immigration let you into the country with either a tourist visa or visa exemption, they are authorising you to stay for up to 60 days. Any extension granted is at the discretion of the immigration office so isn’t guaranteed. So, travel arrangements outside of the 60 days are invalid.

It is a condition of visa exemption and SETV that you have onward travel.
Steve *******

Peter Cox Tourist visa and visa exempt only allows a 60 days stay. To satisfy your airline and Thai Immigration you need onward/return travel within 60 days

You can travel on a 60 day tourist visa or on a 60 day visa exempt/no visa. You can extend both. If exempt entry with NO visa reverts to 30 days the 30 day extension will only give you 60 days. As others have said, the airline are your first hurdle because they may ask for proof of leaving.

Lynnette Munoz The word is that it will be gazetted tomorrow for commencement Sept 15th.

John Villinger yes. I did say exempt entry would be changing but visa wouldn't. Since then it's been announced. They can still do 30 plus 30 if they don't want to get a visa.

I have done this in the past many times, Emirates did question me once as my return was outside the 60 days but I explained I would get 30 day extension.

To cover my arse so to speak one time I booked a flight with air Asia to Vietnam within the 60days for around £28.

Never used it but just incase Emirates or thai immigration questioned it.

You would more need to worry about your airline letting you board, check with them
