TLDR : Answer Summary
An American expat with sole legal custody of his 12-year-old Thai son is seeking advice about obtaining a Non-O visa while acting in a major film in Seoul, Korea. He has concerns about returning to Thailand afterward, ensuring his son is cared for by a nanny during his absence. Commenters suggest contacting the consulate, the possibility of a guardian visa due to his son's schooling, and remind him to carry the necessary legal documents to support his case. Some caution against travel during these uncertain times while emphasizing family priorities.

Honestly based on what happened to me you could be stuck out for a while. Maybe you can somehow pre arrange some things but I’m guessing you don’t have a clear schedule. Also these are volatile times when it come to the movie industry as I’m sure you know and even the best of times movies can stop production so quickly. Me personally I don’t think I’d go. Family and home first.
their son is Thai. It’s irrelevant if they’re in an international school. Being a minor and having full custody they can (normally) get a guardian visa. Whether the Korean embassy will grant it to a non resident is the question. I guess they won’t know until they ask.
Remember to take a copy of his birth certificate with you, and a copy of his Thai ID card, and a copy of your nanny's ID card, and a letter from her stating she is taking full care of your son while you are away. It would also be good if you have a letter from the court giving you full custody of your son. But, if your retirement visa extension is a type OA instead of a type O extension, then all you need is a re-entry permit, as type OA retirement visas and extensions are being let back in the country after you get and meet the requirements for the certificate of entry, with the appropriate covid-19 insurance, quarantine hotel booked and paid for, and a fit to fly doctor's letter, with a negative covid-19 PCR test done within 72 hours before you fly back. You will actually have two visa options. A 90 day type O visa based on a Thai dependent, or get a type OA visa based on retirement.
