Can I leave Thailand for 6 months after renewing my marriage visa and applying for a re-entry permit?

This turned into a train wreck of a post

I think what Barry actually has is a year "EXTENSION OF STAY" that they got from the immigration office where they live based on marriage to a thai

AND

they are going to apply for a NEW yearly extension in November, and buy a re-entry permit at that time

Once they get the year extension inked into their passport and have a re-entry permit they can leave the country for as long as their extension is valid for if they want.

So leaving the country for 6 months is no problem at all

Why don't you just get a multiple entry ?

There is no limit on how long you are out of Thailand. You just need to be back before your extension of stay and re-entry permit expire IF you want to apply for another yearly extension on the stamp you have.
