Hi, wife and I arrive next week in Thailand on a 90 day non O retirement visa. Will I be able to get a non tourist SIM card at AIS or True, or will I need to start with a tourist SIM till my agent gets a 1 year retirement visa extension? Thank you.
Answer summary
Yes, you can get a non-tourist SIM card at AIS or True shops in Thailand with your 90-day non-O retirement visa. While there is an option to use a tourist SIM temporarily, it is recommended to get a non-tourist SIM registered under your name and passport to avoid potential issues. Plans can vary widely, and options include unlimited data for about 3,500 THB annually or package deals depending on your data needs, so it's best to explore different offers at the stores.

Why go thru all that when you can talk with your us phone service and get a international plan an once have successful made the move, then get a local Sim and number

A lot of a lot of people are obsessed with the AIS unlimited SIM without realising they can get much better full 5G speed, and just pick a package with the amount of data they actually need. For example, I have a prepaid (no commitment) monthly auto-renew package from Dtac that gives me 10 GB of data plus FWD insurance for 99 baht a month. There are also lots of other deals like 50 GB of 5G speed then throttled unlimited speed each month plus free dtac Wifi Unlimited for 329 baht, 100 GB full 5G speed for 379 baht, or one of the more interesting options: 10 GB full 5G speed per month for 200 baht with a McDonald's 200 baht gift voucher each month free, so basically your mobile data is totally free forever if you eat at McDonald's once a month anyway.

Tourist SIM cards are kind of fraud. They just look cheap compared for similar services from your home country.

Just get a standard SIM from
****
or Lotus etc.

It is below 300THB - not the 3500THB people mention here. Seems they are bad in math. 3500THB is $100, who is so stupid to buy a $100 SIM in a country where a SIM is $10?

Go for AIS take your passport you can get prepaid, Install the app, get it verified with your passport, Drop 1000฿ on it after verified and ask for a receipt. That will help to open bank account, also soon they will release via the app the verification document needed for bank accounts

get a 1-2-call AIS prepaid SIM card on your name with a monthly 199.- THB deduction, in any AIS phone shop. Register it to your passport and name. Most cafes, restaurants and hotel have free WiFi. And once you rent somewhere, get Internet for 600 Baht a month, and use your phone'sApps like Whatsapp and LINE with your house WiFi
Jim *********

Get your sim and then look at these prices in AIS . Gives yo WiFi for a month. If you need calls you can add 121 for ฿20-50

Jim Dowling that's ridiculously low speed 1 mbps or 2 mbps when the carrier's standard speed is typically 180 mbps or faster.

Word to wise. You are only allowed 3 Sims total with a passport ever ( to combate call center fraud) so dont just toss in a yr or so and get another. I go thru True. And its as others have said easy at a mall with passport. And about 2500 to 3500 a yr you pay for 1 yr. And can renew after 8 months.

WARNING: in 2017, my Thai daughter, was using an el cheapo Internet from the airport. She was playing games, watching YouTube.

When we returned home (Japan) her phone was not connecting to anything.

When I called Softbank, they said we had racked up a bill of 1,600 US$.

How? That phone number is for a child, she would not know how to do that.

SoftBank said, you did not disable roaming. As soon as that cheap plan hits a hickup, it reverses to roaming and she was using international calls to watch whatever she was watching at international roaming prices.

SoftBank was kind and said we will forgive you now, but this is once in lifetime.

Jim Davis back then, you need to leave your phone in airplane mode THEN turn on the Wi-Fi, to prevent the phone from using roaming data as a backup to the Wi-Fi connection. Nowadays, phones have an option to disable data roaming to prevent accidental roaming.
Jim *******

I learned that, all our phones have roaming disabled permanently from the provider.

AIS and True (now incorporates DTAC) they are the only ones with national coverage, nobody else have their own masts everywhere. Not even a single one.

The cheaper options (smaller companies) rent the bandwidth from AIS and True, with a lower priority. Works fine in bigger places, Bangkok, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai... but if you go to the sticks there may be a message "No Internet Access".

10 years go I had a dedicated Garmin GPS with Thai maps but as soon as I was going under the highway, a tunnel or anything above the car, even tall buildings, it would lose connection.

@Michel Tegelaar

If you are using an agent, they can do it all with whatever SIM you come with, including the number from airport booths (tourist SIM). Then, it is your responsibility to top that one once a month.

As you are in for Non 0 1 year extension, I would recommend that you do it with AIS SIM, no top ups for a year and that number remains yours forever. You will need it for everything.

Not living in Thai all 12 months, I have no other Internet router (fixed, at home), using that iPhone as our router, 2 laptops, no hickups.

AIS, just checked. 6Mbps both download and upload.

My plan was 3,800 THB, a year ago, I think there was 300 THB surcharge for something done only first time.

Jim Davis have you checked how much data you actually use in a month? You'll likely find you could get 5G full speed for the same price or much less if you use data like the typical person. People get sold on the idea of unlimited without knowing they may use only 50 or even less than 10 GB a month, the latter of which would cost you 99 baht a month for 5G full speed (typically 180 mbps or faster).
Jim *******
Jim *******
Where do I check the speed? I am using that Thai SIM in my iPhone as a home router, my wife connects to it too, watches her soapies day and night.
Pui *****

Jim Davis you might want to consider getting dtac or True's SIM card-based wifi home router which offers max speed (100 mbps or more) with 100 GB a month for 399 baht, 200 GB for 599 baht, or 500 GB for 899 baht, all with a free router. Search dtac@home online, for example.

To open bank account, you need Thai SIM linked to your passport. AIS (and others) can make a soft SIM Thai card with Thai number (3,800 THB for a year with unlimited Internet).

You can toggle between that Thai SIM and the national SIM that camewith your mobile.

They will make a document that you take to your bank when opening new bank account.

I agree, you won’t need a Thai number (sim) if you’re not using a debit card or online banking but once you do, you will definitely need one registered with your passport and the bank will take a photograph of you

Fred ******

Phil Beer That works if you are staying in Thailand for the whole year. If not then the other options are month to month. Now there is 450 baht 12Mbs Unlimited package for 30 days. There is also 100GB at max speed for 379baht. Just go to any DTAC or AIS store in any mall (same company) and buy a SIM. The SIM costs 49 baht and you can load funds in the app with any credit card or at any AIS or DTAC store. They properly register the SIM with your passport and you can get the document for immigration at the same time. Then just choose the best package for your needs in the app.

You can get a non tourist sim at any of AIS or True shops in town, but tbh I believe a tourist sim would work just as well as long as it’s registered in your name and affiliated to your passport.

it will work just the same but you cannot top it up with a cheap package you can get through their apps.
