TLDR : Answer Summary
When living in Thailand, choosing the right phone service is essential. The most recommended carriers are AIS, DTAC, and True, with AIS frequently noted for its extensive coverage and reliability. Users suggest visiting a physical store to explore plans with your passport. Many recommend starting with a prepaid plan for simplicity, especially for newcomers. Prices can vary, but monthly plans can be found for as low as 150 baht, depending on data needs. It’s advised to check local options and feedback for coverage specific to your living area.

AIS have wide coverage around all parts of Thailand. The best choice 👌

Go for unlimited data options

Tourist SIM card , which one and where in Pattaya do I get one for 6 weeks ?
Graham ******
@Robert *********
Get a sim from 7-11 or a phone shop and buy a 30 day plan then when it expires either buy the same plan or get the cheaper two week version

ok will do, thanks

Got the 350 baht AIS e Sim. Still using US Mobile # for call/text

AIS

AIS is by far the best sim

@David *********
Half the price of TRUE for a one month SIM. Without the crowds in their stores too, so you don't waste time.
Pertti *************
I will prefer true. Unlimited 20mb internet with voice etc under 500 month. My use is somewhere 200-300Gt monthly and ais etc do not work reasonable rates..

when you get here and buy a True sim card. They will usually install it for you if you ask nicely and they are not busy. While you are there top it up with say 500 baht credit. I run 2 cards in my phone. True for local calling and DTAC for mobile internet.

AIS best

Dtac internet is slow and useless as is better can add call baht to it anywhere if you need calls as is reliable and fast

I use true .. but they aren’t great ..

I’m not a fan of True either. I moved to dtac. I may actually move to AIS eventually, but moving is such a nuisance.

in my opinion its best to ask neighbours about what carrier they chosr. AID has biggest in Thailand. Then what do you need to use your phone for? I'm guessing unlimited data and all carriers have the same at the same prices

DTAC

I'm on AIS and quite happy with it, I could probably get a cheaper deal but the coverage has been mostly great, with high speeds even out in the boonies. But compared to the US, I don't think there's a "bad option" here. Whenever I go back I'm kinda shocked at how bad the service is, for 3x what I pay in Bangkok.

One sort-of "life hack" here is you can get a very nice prepaid plan at the airport, and use that for the first month while you get settled, unless you really need a stable number from Day One. Which you probably don't because people like to use Line, Messenger and WhatsApp (etc) instead of regular phone.

I pay $100, 34,000 baht a month for the phone in USA. That's 13x times my plan here 265 baht
Andy **********
@Clint ********
฿34,000 baht?? 100 USD is approximately ฿3300 baht 🤔

extra zero obviously

I think I was in shock seeing ฿34k, I was just doing a quick calculation 265 x13= ฿3445 and realised it's just an extra "0" I think I'm still

asleep 🤷😂🤣😂 it's the same in the UK, with the internet prices and receiving a poor connection (always buffering) it just shows you, our own countries are ripping us off with everything.

@Kevin ******
Agreed AIS. Prepaid plans are cheap and offered for tourists but if you are going to live there, they offer even cheaper post-pay plans that are great. You just need to show them proof of a long term visa (ex. retirement visa) and you pay monthly.
Alejandro ***********
Ais the best 👌
Pui *****
There are only 3 mobile carriers, and 2 of them have merged (True /dtac) although they still operate separately. All are quite similar, and you'll be shocked how cheap data is in Thailand.

s over the past year. None of them have it. The best you can get is a 200 baht local sim (avoid the over-priced tourist ones)

not anymore. It's very expensive in 7-11

in most stores, they want to always sell only the higher priced ones, which are atleast 500 baht+. They do not show any lower priced ones. Been seeing this trend for last 2 years in Bangkok, pattaya, Phuket. Haven't asked in other towns coz I had purchased by then

ok just unlucky then my friend,🙏😉

it's not just me, quite a lot of people. But good I came across your post
Henrik *****
Depends of where, ask the locals, which cover best specific at that destination.
Jordan *******
I use dtac and pay less than 150 baht/month with a 12 month plan at around 1800 baht 1 time payment

I get 100GB data and like 100 minutes every month
Roman **********
Ais, go to a physical store with your passport. They should have an English letter of all the plans and are often cheaper than online
Brandon ************
AIS is the largest company. It'll be your best option unless you'll be living somewhere out of a main area. If that's the case then you should ask people living in that area which carrier has the best signal.

@Brandon ***********
Top advice! I carry two phones in case of flat battery. One has AIS pre-pay and the other True pre-pay. Add-on unlimited data packs on both. Never a problem connecting with either.
