Hi All, Just curious as to whether I can get a long term sim only plan on a DTV visa? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
Answer summary
Yes, you can obtain a long-term SIM-only plan while holding a DTV visa in Thailand. Users have reported that they can easily acquire prepaid SIM cards from various service providers without the need for a work permit. It's essential to carry your passport for registration. Most providers, like AIS and True, do not check your visa type, focusing instead on your identification. For long-term plans, consider prepaid options, which help maintain your number's validity if topped up regularly.

Yes, you dont need a long term visa to get an account with sim.

This assumes you wont have a local bank account with need for a banking app.

I've lived here a very long time. I top up an old sim card with my number that I've had forever, just to keep it alive to receive calls and for the occasional outgoing call. But 99% of what I use is data, so every year I buy a new secondary SIM with a prepaid annual plan on it, and I use that for everything data. 50gb of data for a month, fast enough for seamless streaming and video calls, or even hotspotting my laptop for the odd video conference in any area where the wifi sucks.

You can take it to a phone shop with your passport and they can register it for you easily.

Also, if you want to keep a prepaid sim alive for a long time, then top it up 20 baht at a time. Every 20 baht adds 1 month of validity. So if you wanna keep your number but will leave the country for 6 months, put 20 baht on it 6x, and your number won't run out of validity and the number won't get recycled back into the system. You can check your validity, plan, credit, etc in the AIS app. 👍🏼

Yes, you can. Just go to any AIS or any other service providers store excluding the outlets at the airport and you can easily get one.

Also, don't forget to carry your passport along.

If you mean a SIM card, the card you buy at Telecom stores such as AIS or True do not expire as long as there is a plan or top up within the last 6 months or so. They don't look at your visa. They only want to take a photo of your passport bio page. It's better to get a prepaid plan so that if you leave Thailand temporarily you simply let the balance fall below the monthly fee and the plan will pause itself until you top up above the monthly fee. Some providers will extend half a month if your balance still has half of the monthly fee. They used to have cheap plans available at the shopping mall stalls if you ask them to show you, but I don't know if they exist anymore. Some stalls said the cheap plan I have aren't available so if I cancel the plan then I lose it and would have to sign up for a more expensive plan. Also many of the SIM cards come up with top up bonuses, like if you top up 150 baht each month you get 10 GB free for the next 30 days. You'll have to check the features of the SIM cards from each provider. The stalls places like big C or lotus tend to have the cheap plans available. If you go to the expensive luxury malls they only have the normal plans.
