Can I extend the 90-day Non-O visa for visiting family in Thailand?

I'm thinking about getting the 90 day Non O "visiting Thai family" visa for an upcoming visit to my wife's family. Am I correct in thinking that this visa can be extended once we are there? We'd like to stay from the first part of January until the last part of April (no firm dates yet).

If there's a better option, I'd be happy to hear about it. Maybe there's a better way to approach this.

Thanks.

TLDR : Answer Summary
The 90-day Non-O visa, based on visiting Thai family, can indeed be extended once for an additional 60 days at an immigration office in Thailand, allowing for a total stay of up to five months. It's also suggested to consider the multi-entry Non-O visa option, which allows for more flexibility, as it may be more convenient despite requiring a short trip outside Thailand to activate the next 90-day segment.

~ Based on my experience I would recommend paying the $200.00 and getting the multi-entry Non-O in the U.S good for one year. Before the first 90 days are up you will need to travel out & back into Thailand to activate another 90 days. I find the 60-day extension based on marriage in country to be quite a lot of time & paperwork. Book a round trip to Luang Prabang from Chiang Mai or Penang from Bkk & enjoy a mini holiday or just border bounce Chiang Khong to Huay xai, Laos and back in the same day.

and with them only being here Jan to Apr, what is the reason you'd have them spend 200USD on a visa they use for 4 months?

~ The single entry visa from the LA Consulate is already $80.00. The extension is another 1900 baht. So it's only a $60.00 difference in price. Was just giving him options as I've done it both ways.

Thanks. Sounds like a good option.

This is what you're likely to require in country to get the one time 60 day visit thai family extension at your immigration office

a 90 day single entry Non-O visa based on marriage to a thai or raising half thai children can be extended once for 60 days based on "visiting family" for 1900baht at the immigration office where you stay.

That gives you 5 months total stay

If you are from a country that uses the eVisa online system you want this choice;

its the only way you get a thai visa when you're in the US nowadays. It's all online, you upload the required documents, pay, they email you the PDF file that you print which IS your visa

here's the website
