TLDR : Answer Summary
To stay in Thailand for about five months, you might consider different options, as the Non-Immigrant O visa is a broad category. The Special Tourist Visa (STV) allows an initial stay of 90 days and can be extended twice for an additional 90 days each, totaling 270 days. Alternatively, you can use a single-entry tourist visa for 60 days, followed by a 30-day extension based on tourism, and then apply for an in-country Non-O visa if you are over 50, which allows a further 90-day stay without requiring health insurance.

To stay in Thailand for five months, you have a couple of options (without using the Non-OA visa):

1. An STV. This allows you to enter Thailand for 90 days, and allows two 90 day extension of stays for a total for 270 days. Health insurance *IS* required.

2. A single entry tourist visa followed by a 30 day extension of stay based on tourism followed by an in-country Non-O visa based on being over 50.

- The single entry tourist visa allows a person to stay for 60 days

- A 30 day extension of stay based on tourism allows a person to stay for another 30 days, however can only be acquired once.

- An in-country Non-O Visa Based on Being Over 50 allows a person to stay in Thailand for 90 days. It does require bringing in 800K THB.

- Health insurance is *NOT* required

Those are the only two options I can think of.

you can apply for the STV visa, it will give you 3 times 90 days admitted stay. However the requirements are quite not easy to fulfill. Among financial requirement, you need to prove fully 90 days of accomodation

and the STV visa cannot be changed into any other visa inside Thailand.

the O/P only says they wanna stay here 5 months, maybe the STV would be an easy way for them to do that. They don't indicate if they want to change their visa after that OR that they wanna stay longer.

@Tod ********
if that is really the timeline for their stay the STV is perfect

The Non-immigrant O visa is a very broad category. What would be the reason of entering Thailand?

, unfortunately, there is no three-month extension for Non-O. For non-o based on retirement, a one-year extension is the only choice unless you have a Thai family.

I just got A 60 day Covid extension and I have been told that if they stop the covid extension. I can apply for another 60days for family visit. Never heard of a 3 month extension.

She probably can not file a 60 day extension of stay based on family if she's on a Non-O based on retirement.
