TLDR : Answer Summary
Upon arriving in Thailand with a 60-day tourist visa, you are not required to apply for an extension immediately. You can wait a few days before doing so; however, it is advisable to extend close to the expiration of your initial 60 days. Most immigration offices allow you to extend your visa up to 30 days before it expires, and doing it early is beneficial as it adds the extended days onto your existing stamp.

A number of offices allow you to extend up to 45 days prior, most allow 30. There’s no disadvantage going early as they add the days on to your existing stamp.
