I fly to Thailand from the UK for 30 days each time.
Is it true I can only come twice a year now?
Answer summary
There is currently no official limit on the number of times a traveler can enter Thailand on a visa-exempt basis by air; however, frequent entries (especially back-to-back) may result in increased scrutiny from immigration officers. The two-entry rule applies primarily to land border crossings, not air travel. Travelers are encouraged to maintain a legitimate tourist profile, including having return tickets and sufficient funds, to avoid complications at immigration.

The two entries per year are ONLY FOR LAND CROSSINGS - If you fly into Thailand from another country, you will be able to obtain "Visa Exempt" entry for 30 days and then can extend for another 30 days. You can also obtain a SETV prior to leaving your home country that is good for 60 days and extend for an additional 30 days. You can do this as many times as you would like. Where you will draw attention is if you crest around 150 - 180 days per year. You will face increased scrutiny and possible questioning or even denied entry.
When the new visa comes in as a tourist your only allowed in thailand over the period of 1 year, 180 days and that means you can have 6 x 30 days or buy a tourist visa for 1900 baht for 60 days and extend it for another 30 days for 1900 baht but you can only do that twice, but as it stands now you get 60 days on arrival but once it goes in the gazette it ends
No limits on entry by air, 2 times a year by land and 180 days total in a year is what I believe I have read. I come by air 4 times a year by air and stay 30 days each time
Came in yesterday as I do every 6 months....passport full of entry and exit stamps, the officer didn't looked at it.
With the new DTAC system they know you are coming 3 day's in advance so if you were here before the system recognise you. I spoke to a good lady friend of mine who works as a fairly high ranking immigration officer and all she could say was that they profile the people who enter in 6 different ways.....and no she couldn't tell me what those were 😄 only that most of the people my age don't fit the tail 😆😆😆
If you stay only for 30 days and than live the country lets say for a month or two and than come back to Thailand your are a tourist. So long you don’t get over the 180 days in one year you should be fine.
Yes you can come as often as you like. If more than 2 x 30 days best to get a visa. Assuming you are UK citizen. Others may vary but all the requirements are on the Thai embassy website in your country.
There is NO limit to the number of times you can enter Thailand on a visa-exempt status. However, the more entries you have, the more scrutiny you will face at the immigration desk.
The immigration officer has significant freedom in determining whether you are legitimately entering as a tourist thus able to enter visa exempt, or whether you are abusing the system. Those who leave Thailand and reenter within a day or two are usually under severe scrutiny for abuse of the visa exempt status. Those who Thailand go back to their home country for a while and then return to Thailand for another vacation are generally not facing much scrutiny.
So you will likely not have a problem. To maximize your chances, ensure you have a copy of your return plane ticket, your hotel reservations which should match your plane reservations, and have 20,000 Thai baht equivalent of currency (You can have it in your home country’s currency if you wish). This amount must be in cash on your person. There is no ATM between the airplane and immigration so make sure you board the plane with the cash in pocket. Again it can be in Thai baht or any other currency.
Will Whelan recommend you reread my comment. The immigration officer has complete freedom on how all of the rules are interpreted - so nobody is "sure" of any aspect of it. The law is clear that you must have cash. The law is usually not enforced. But if you show them evidence of money in your bank account maybe some of them will take Mercy out on you. The law is very clear you must have cash. To maximize your chances of getting through immigration with no hassle at all recommend you take cash
Not correct, the limit applies to those using back to back extensions and land border crossings. As you are not using the extensions and return to the UK you are seen as a bona fide traveller and therefore can come and go.
John Villinger where is that stated . Its up to the imagination officer to decide. Having spoken to an immigration lawyer he told me only 2 entries per year regardless of where and how you come from. Of course the I.o.may stamp you through 3 orb4 times.but it seems after 2 entries you stand a risk of being denied entry !
Garry Gavin You are absolutely right. A friend who is an IO explained to me that the decision lays, without the right of appeal, solely with the IO.
What people fail to understand is the directive is to stop abuse, it is not the amount of time you enter in a given year, but the pattern your entries show. The tourism exemption is what it says on the tin, Tourism. Unfortunately, many use it as an easy way to stay for long periods and effectively live in Thailand without an adequate visa.
The frequency of border hopping, especially by land is detected automatically by the system.
So for instance if you come to Thailand for a holiday and decide to visit the region and go to Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia, you will get a new exemption on each entry as it clear that is tourism. You may be asked to show your departure date to your home country, but not that often.
If, on the other hand, you have consecutive entries with extensions with short border hopping, between (1 day to 6 Months) you will be flagged and likely to be refuse entry.
It is time that the system dodgers start posting the real facts of the situation rather that declaring law their personal experiences. Just as final note, The Thai rules are no more drastic that the rules that apply in countries like the US, Canada, Schengen Countries, Australia, etc.
Andrew Wright nothing has changed yet. So you can come in as much as you want but the limit on days is questionable and the extensions are being changed to max 2 times. One for 30 days, one for 7 days. Think you misunderstood the IO or the IO doesn't know his job.
Andrew Wright it’s all with 12 months . That’s what they’re looking for . Those that aren’t real tourists like come in and get a extention then try come back numerous times .
Ralph Tyson immigrations sometimes have their own rule, especially in the far provinces. A lot of people doing their own visas without agencies knows this.
