TLDR : Answer Summary
The Samui immigration office can process a change from a Tourist Visa (TV) to a Non-O visa if you meet the necessary requirements and have time left on your current visa. If unable, they may direct you to the main provincial office in Surat Thani. It’s important to check with your local immigration office for specific requirements related to the Non-O visa you wish to apply for. Additionally, while changing the visa type, you should consider meeting retirement requirements if relevant when applying to extend the Non-O visa later.

Thanks guys. Apologies, one more question before you close this issue. Do I need to meet the requirements of retirement (eg 800,00 etc) when I apply to change visa type or when I actually apply to extend the O visa. Thanks

yes, you need to meet all requirements that are specified by your local immigration office for the reason you apply for an extension.

to clarify my question. I am travelling from the uk on TV and will change this to an O visa. My initial question was if this could be done in Samui. This has been answered clearly. I want to know I need to meet the requirements of retirement (eg 800,00 etc) when I apply to change visa type or when I actually apply to extend the O visa

there are requirements for each of in-country non-o application and application for 1-year extension. They are slightly different. And each time of any application, you need to meet the requirements for that application. All application at immigration office are “new process” every time, No “renewing application”.

Speaking of funds, yes you need to meet funds requirements every (both) cases. Detail requirements such as seasoning period, minimum fund to be kept, are different between in-country non-o and 1year extension based on being over 50 though.

yes. What is your passport nation?

AFAIK: The Samui immigration office should be able to go from a tourist visa entry to a Non-O visa inside the country IF you meet the requirements and you have the time left on your current stamp they require.

If they can't do it, they'll send you to the main office for that province which is Surat Thani.

Suggest you ask your local Thai immigration office and get their list of requirements for the visa you are applying for...

... But you should be able to get the Non O visa if you meet the requirements for it.

You say you are entering Thailand with a tourist visa which will allow you 60 days on arrival plus added 30 days extension from Thai immigration =90 days stay.

You have not said what Non O visa you will be applying for. So unable to assist you further.

thanks for your response. I have a home and bank account in samui and can meet the financial requirements. I need non O as I intend to extend it for retirement.
