TLDR : Answer Summary
You cannot convert your 60-day tourist stamp to a one-year Non-O retirement visa. Since you are already holding a Non-O visa (whether issued in-country or via the evisa system), you will need to wait until you have 30 days or less remaining on your current Non-O permission to stay to apply for a one-year extension. If you entered Thailand on a tourist stamp, you must exit and re-enter with your Non-O visa to activate it. It's recommended to check with your local immigration office for specific procedures and requirements.

You will find it much easier to apply for Non-o at your home embassy (with your local bank account and proof of address). As it is all online I am not sure whether you need to be actually in the home country. Once you re-enter Thailand you will have a proper 90 day visa which allows you to open a bank account. You will find it (certainly) impossible to open a bank account on your current 60 days exemption.

So you arrived on a tourist visa, applied for and obtained a 90 day Non-O visa inside Thailand (which will be stamped used). Your visa is now not relevant, all that is relevant is the date you are permitted to stay in Thailand until. You can apply for a 12 month extension of stay (not a visa) when you have 30 days or less left on your permitted to stay stamp, some immigration offices allow you to apply when you have 45 days or less. Best to check with your local immigration office and also get their handout of requirements

Just want to say advice on this platform is helpful in many ways.

Appreciate information from others who have gone through the process: whatever question is asked.

Cannot convert 60 day exempt, you gotta enter using the 90 day nu on O and then extend that for 1 year. Total 15 months. Why did you enter on a 60 day exempt when you already had a 90 non O ??

Yes you can. You can obtain a non-O 90-day visa from an immigration office, which then cancels your 60-day visa exempt entry. There is no requirement to leave the country

ok...but regardless it's kinda pointless, if that's what you intended why not just get it before you leave and save the hassle. Then only have to go once to extend for a full year.

Thad's correct. It's getting more difficult to convert in-country from visa exempt to non-O. I fully expect this avenue will be stopped in the next year or so

incorrect. You switch in country from visa exempt to Non-O. Standard practice at Immigration, you do not need to leave the Kingdom.

If you already have non o 90 days apply in thailand, and using yr stay in thailand with yr non o 90 days ,why worry abt yr 60 days visa exempt on arrival in yr passport.30 to 45 days b4 yr non o expire and go for 1 yr extention where you get yr non o.

Did you convert to Non O inside Thailand, or did you apply online at a Thai embassy abroad? Your post is unclear about how and where you got the Non O.

so that is your retirement visa and you want a 12 month extension of stay which is not a visa

as others have noted, depending on which office has jurisdiction over where you live you can apply from 45 to 30 days before your stamp expires. Beware that the 800,000 baht must season for 2 months before you apply. So basically you have to get the money in the account within the first 30 days of getting your non-O

You’ll need to leave to cancel your current stamp and re-enter to activate your Non O visa. You can’t convert any stamps as you already have a new visa.

I’m assuming you’ve gotten the in country Non O rather than one you applied for via the evisa system.

If so you have the “retirement visa” already. What you’re asking is when can you do the yearly extension off of it.

The answer is when you have 30 days left (some offices allow 45 days) or less on that visa.

Thanks! My problem is that in my passport, because I'm still on 60 days stamp, I can't open bank account.

It sounds like he's bought the in-country 90-day visa from an immigration office, so he's not yet on the extension

If you applied for and converted your tourist visa in-country, you are no longer on a tourist stamp but on the initial 90-day Non-O visa.

If you are having problems opening a bank account while on the 90-day Non-O, you can still apply for a one-year extension of stay using the same affidavit letter from your embassy confirming your income. After that, you should have no issues opening a bank account.
