TLDR : Answer Summary
When one spouse applies for a NON-O visa in Thailand due to being over 50, the other spouse can potentially apply for a dependent visa within Thailand, especially at the Phuket immigration office, based on recent policy changes. However, this option is not widely reported, so proceeding through a consulate in the home country is a safer route unless the primary visa holder has already received their year extension.

If you happen to be using the Phuket office then from a recent change in policy you could possibly get a dependent visa in country. I’ve not seen a report from anyone who has as yet which is why I used “possibly”.

If not using Phuket then no. You would need to wait until your spouse is on their year extension of stay and then go to a nearby consulate and apply there.

just checking, so our only option would be to fly back to Australia and apply. We are currently in Thailand on Visa exemption.

HaNOi or HCMC. Not one in Da Nang. Check the website for whichever embassy you’re going to go to for their requirements. Some require appointments.
