If I get a DTV, and then find a legal legit job in Thailand, can I change to a work visa?
Answer summary
Yes, it is possible to change a DTV (Digital Tourist Visa) to a work visa if you find a legal job in Thailand, but the process can be complicated. You would need to find a company that will sponsor your work permit. Generally, this involves exiting Thailand, applying for a Non-B visa from an embassy, and then re-entering Thailand with the Non-B visa to obtain your work permit. Although converting a DTV while in the country is theoretically possible, it is often more challenging and many suggest it's easier to apply for the Non-B visa outside of Thailand to avoid bureaucratic hurdles.

You can but there's nothing particular to the DTV in this regard, you can do the same with any other visa or no visa at all. It usually involves leaving and starting again with a new visa. It's possible to convert in country but not generally easy on any visa and DTV won't make that easier. The DTV may provide a slight complication in that it's a 5 year multi entry visa that isn't extinguished (like most visas) on first use. So you might have to cancel it. But this is all *possible*.

1. Exit the country

2. Get a non B visa(3 months) from an embassy near Thailand

3. Come into Thailand with your non B visa

4. Get your work permit

5. Prepare to do 1 year extension for non B visa before the end of the 3rd month

It’s maybe possible but converting visas is always a pain in the ass because they put up even more bureaucratic hurdles to overcome.

Should you be able to find a job it’s much easier to just leave and apply for non-b for the purpose of applying for a work permit in another country like Vietnam or Laos. Usually takes about one week that you need to stay there.

It’s valid for three months. Then you (rather your employer) do everything for your wp. With that you then go and apply for a one year extension of non-b.

You then get the extension, but at first it’s only for one month in which they inspect the working place more thoroughly. If they pass you will get the 12 month stamp (then only valid for 11).

Just gonna tell you that apart from teaching it will be close to impossible to find a job here, unless you possess some really special highly sought after skills. There is usually more than enough Thai work force available who will work for less, don’t need to go through the complicated and costly process of getting a foreigner work permit and speak the language as well as integrate smoothly since they know and understand the culture.

A foreigner usually just means more headaches and Thais hate having more headaches unless it grants something valuable in return.

Much easier to find remote work or if you are very lucky, something with a foreigner usually big player.

Thailand doesn't really want you to work and take the job of Thai people. there are very specific job types that they recruit such as teaching English, but realize that your salary will be very small. Best strategy is to save making money in a country that pays well and then coming to Thailand.

Correct - Thailand does not want foreigners to come here and take work from low and no skilled employees. Thailand has plenty of low skilled workers to fill these occupations. However high skilled individuals in education, medicine, engineering, information technology etc will have no problem finding work. You can't get a job making and selling street food or flipping burgers at McDonalds, but if you are say a classically trained French chef with 20 years experience you will have no trouble finding work as a head chef at a hotel. Finding work it is really going to depend on your skill set and what you have to offer.

you're only licenced to practice in the country you obtained your licence in, and as I've said already in other replies you can't get a licence here as you are not a thai citizen so you are very restricted on what you can actually do for work.
เดแคลน ***********
เดแคลน ***********
Thai Jag It doesn't matter whether someone's qualifications are recognised or not. You still need a licence to teach at university level or to practise psychology in a hospital setting, and these licences are currently restricted to Thai citizens.

Consequently, private practices and international schools are the only remaining options. However, these positions often pay poorly, and the roles that do offer competitive salaries are rarely available. Meeting their specific hiring conditions is a major hurdle too, and even then, the candidates generally hold specialised Master’s degrees or PhDs for those positions.

As an example, St Andrews International School advertised for a psychologist or counsellor this year, they required applicants to have at least a Master’s degree specialised in Child and Adolescent Development Psychology or Counselling, plus five years of clinical experience.

I know someone who found a teaching job while he was in Thailand. Not sure if he was on a DTV or just a tourist exemption but he got a work visa with the job and didn’t have to leave the country. I don’t know what process he went through so can’t advise on that but it was possible for him.

John Hampton I guess so but it will depend on your qualifications and the school. If you work at a decent international school and have a teaching degree you’ll do quite well as opposed to someone just teaching English either something like a TEFL. Depends of your life style though.

Bill Cleaver it's not even just the US. It's flying to many different countries, and having a 'strong' passport massively cuts down on the administrative work and personnel headaches that come with visa applications.

Last year, my wife had to travel to 10+ different countries outside of Asia, which would have been a lot of admin work and visa applications without her two other passports & when you start to look at major companies like Unilever, Toyota, Booking, etc, you can see why they look to hire the demographic they do in upper management. It's not just because of the difference in management styles; the passport strength is also a massive factor.

unless you work in the management side of things its impossible to work as a psychologist, or psychiatrist as we can't get the licence to practice here.

You can legally work as a councillor in private clinics, rehab resorts and international schools but the pay is often pitful compared to the workload, treatment etc, and positions with decent pay at a good company or school very rarely come up due to this and when they do the competition is extremely high.

(Im not tell you this to put you off, just giving you a heads up on what to expect)

Petr S. Van Valkenburg anyone can manage? The system in place is very airtight secure to enable Thais to have access to just about every job before a foreigner, even then we’d need to obtain a work permit.

Permits are hard to obtain and only if you have a job lined up or someone sponsors the visa.

Ie you won’t get the visa if you’re not worthy, if OP has DTV and has been offered a path to work visa it’s completely legal as long as he takes the right steps regarding DTV

Theoretically it's possible to convert a DTV into another visa type inside Thailand but immigration offices in Thailand don't like dealing with a DTV so your mileage may vary. You also have the problem of the paperwork for the new job which you would need to show while applying to convert from one visa type to the other but most employers want you to apply for a Non-B work visa outside of Thailand as the paperwork required is significantly less in which case it wouldn't be possible to convert. That would leave you with trying to find a way to cancel your DTV, usually at the consulate that issued it, before you could apply for the Non-B visa.
Jord ******

Out of interest, do immigration give a reason why they don’t like to deal with DTV/s as a whole?

not that I'm aware of but they weren't consulted. Implemented entirely by the MFA

I think this covers all the bases. Unless your going for teaching or some very high skilled job, I would not bank on finding a job here.
