Is it possible to apply for the DTV in your country of origin to while traveling?

I’m from Germany but currently in Indonesia and might go to Malaysia next, while trying to apply online for the DTV through the Thai embassy in Germany.

Does anyone know if it’s possible? Since the papers need to be submitted for the embassy in the country you officially live in, right ? But is it ok to be outside the country when applying ?

Thanks
Answer summary
The discussion revolves around whether one can apply for the Thai DTV visa from a country other than their country of origin, particularly while traveling in Southeast Asia. Multiple comments clarify that applicants must apply from the country they are physically located in during the application process, meaning the Thai embassy in either Indonesia or Malaysia can be used, provided they are present there. It is also notable that required documents must be translated into English and that applicants should remain in the same country until their visa application is processed. There are nuances regarding residency and the necessity to prove genuine ties to the country of application.

You can apply typically in the place that you are at (assuming an embassy present) or also (not all countries) apply in their embassy your own country and as they get tons of requests being the “local” one, they don’t poke so hard at residence at these types as much.

The grey line being are you based at home and “just on holiday”; then be expected to facilitate that route. Are you living in Singapore or Hong Kong and wanting to apply there? Be ready to prove your genuine deep ties to the country; can’t be passing through.

This means if person A is from Germany and in a place like Hong Hong (for example) then they would have to apply in their own country and would be allowed to do so.

It’s mostly about finding the government agency most sensibly supposed to cover you, as their will be one.

It just depends on what your situation is.

Once you apply, you have to remain in the same country. Only when you get your visa/ refusal you are allowed to leave that country.

It’s not possible, the answer to all your questions is no, no, no. If you want to apply in Germany, you need to go to Germany, they will ask you proof of location. If you are in Indonesia, then just apply in Indonesia

If you are physically present in Indonesia then you apply online using the evisa system, when you provide your location your application is automatically routed via the Thai consulate in Jakarta. Where you are physically located at the time you apply determines the consulate that handles your application, and you must remain in the jurisdiction of that consulate until your application process completes

I suggest you go to the embassy website, of the country you are currently in, and read through the requirements. You will then see that you can apply in that country, and need to remain in that country while your visa is processed.

You have to apply in your country of residence and be ready for a 1:1 interview if requested.

edit: corrected further down

this is not true. Yes, for many of the embassies in western countries, you need to be a resident of that country to apply, but if you travel and apply via one of the embassies in the Southeast Asia region, you don’t have to be a resident of that country

DTV_BegPecker yes you might be right, @TurquoisePomegranate1556 can apply while in Indonesia or Malaysia.

Residency in Germany but I’m traveling for a few months and won’t make it there before applying for the DTV. Does it mean I can’t apply then?

TurquoisePomegranate1556 correction: apparently you can apply while outside Thailand being either in Indonesia or Malaysia.
DTV_Be*******

TurquoisePomegranate1556 He is only partly correct. For most Thai embassies in Western counties, you have to be a resident of that country and be physically in that country. However, to apply via one of the Thai embassies in the region, you don’t need to be a resident, just physically present the entire time your application is being processed. So you can actually apply via Indonesia and Malaysia, but like others stated, documents need to be translated into English. Malaysia also trends to be the most difficult in the region, asking for tons of extra documents
Hǝınz ***********
Hǝınz ***********
TurquoisePomegranate1556 yes, according to Thai embassy you need to be physically available for an interview (which hardly ever happens tmk).

it does happen! And many embassies want to see proof of where you are ( entry stamp etc.)

I applied in Australia while in Indonesia 🇮🇩

It’s not advisable they could catch you out.

Worth noting my visa I got in November 2024 ( I done it knowing full well it could have been rejected)

I’m not sure why so many people are confused by this. A lot of posts asking if people can apply in countries they’re not in or whether they can go to Thailand before dtv is granted.

Pretty basic stuff 🤷‍♂️

But the paperwork will be in the language of my home country, how does that work then?
Za *******

TurquoisePomegranate1556 then you need them translated to English. All these are basic informations, you can find them on Google. Alle Papiere müssen in Englisch übersetzt werden. Wenn du der Visum in Deutschland beantragen möchtest, muss du dich in Deutschland befinden

OP
Typisch Deutsch. I wasn’t able to access the website due to my current VPN and I asked clearly here the community because people have submitted different documents even when they weren’t asked for, other submitted while traveling so obviously there are many ways it seems to do it. But y’all just haters so you care about where I ask and how instead of just providing information.

TurquoisePomegranate1556 no, you have to submit everything in English and they check it in the country you are resident in. In this case KL.

Don’t submit papers in deutsch.

I would not be surprised if they even check your IP where you submitted your application from. If you have an IP from Malaysia but apply from Germany, some red flags 🚩 might get triggered.
