Can I apply for dependants on my DTV from a different country?

I'd like to ask if anyone has got their DTV in one country and added/applied dependants to the DTV from a different country? We've been waiting weeks for the Canberra office in Australia and have flights booked. Their website says ten working days and we called to confirm but gave ourselves an extra few weeks after those ten days to as apply for the dependant visas but STILL don't have the DTV 😭

We need to be out of Australia and thinking of applying in Penang for the dependant visas. Will this be an issue?

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user is inquiring if it's permissible to apply for dependent visas in a different country after having received their DTV in Australia. They express frustration over delays from the Canberra office and contemplate applying in Penang. Responses indicate that applying for dependent visas from another country is generally accepted, but caution against applying in Malaysia due to a notorious approval difficulty. Instead, alternatives such as Indonesia, Vietnam, or Laos are recommended.

but we don't risk it if we don't apply in Australia? Do you mean that there would be an issue applying at a different embassy?

Anonymous participant Henrik is a great believer in applying in your own country despite the visa designed to be applied for anywhere in the world. You can find posts of dependent DTVss issued in a country different to the main applicant with no problem or risk.

thanks for the clarification.

It is not an issue to apply for the dependent visa elsewhere, many have done so. I would think twice about Penang though. Malaysia is the most difficult embassy for approval as many posts confirm. Much easier to apply in Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos.

thank you, we're hoping a dependant visa will be alot more straight forward as they don't all the same documents - just bank statements and a letter of sponsorship + the original DTV

Anonymous participant Yeah, in general a dependent visa is easier and quicker than the original. Don't you need 6 mths of accommodation booked ? Did you check with Penang embassy?

I didn't know about that one 🤔 in Australia they just need a name but no confirmations of booking

Anonymous participant Approvals differ depending on the embassy. Malaysia is strict on having 6 months of accommodation booked in Thailand along with 3-6 months seasoned 500k THB for the main applicant. i imagine them requiring the same, for a dependent. Check first before applying there.
