Hi, I am about to apply for a DTV via workcation/freelance from Australia (embassy in Canberra) but don’t have an active ABN. My current one has expired.
Should I apply for a new ABN before I put in my application?
Answer summary
The user is planning to apply for a Digital Nomad Visa (DTV) in Thailand from Australia but lacks an active Australian Business Number (ABN) as their previous one has expired. They inquire whether they should apply for a new ABN before submitting their visa application. Comments suggest that evidence of income and self-employment, such as a certificate of employment and substantial documentation confirming their status as a sole trader, will be necessary for the visa application.

You will need to provide a certificate of employment. Being a sole trader operating on an ABN, I expect you will need to submit something substantial to show your sole trader status such as a tax return and endorsement letter from your accountant. If you have been living under the GST threshold you might struggle to paint a picture of someone that can support themselves and has employment.
CharmingGiraffe9403 yes they do ATO will contact you if you have not used it for a period of time. If you are no longer using it they take it off the system but your ABN is still there in the background to re use in the future.
