Can my partner apply for the DTV visa while we're still in Thailand?

Hey guys, my partner will be applying for the DTV (workation) this winter at the embassy in Madrid, Spain (he’s Spanish).

We are currently already in Thailand, but will fly to Spain for the holidays and stay for a month. Given that a lot of people report slow processing time at the embassy in Madrid, I’m not sure whether applying on the 19th of December (the day we arrive) will be sufficient time. We fly back to Thailand on January 21st… it’s just over a month but of course there’s the holidays in between.

Does anyone have any experience with filing their application while still in another country? In other words: could my partner send in his application before December 19th or will they check whether he was actually in Spain on that day?

Thanks in advance for your help!

TLDR : Answer Summary
A user inquired about applying for a DTV (workation) visa at the Spanish embassy in Madrid while currently in Thailand. They intend to apply on December 19th upon arrival but are concerned about processing times, especially with the holidays approaching. Various comments suggest that applying from a different country may not be advisable, as embassies prefer applicants to be physically present in the country where they apply. Users recommend preparing all documentation in advance and highlight the potential delays due to holiday closures.

Thanks everyone! We’ll file my partner’s application on the 19th as soon as we arrive in Spain. Let’s hope it works out 🤞🏼

Madrid is known for being a bit slower, and the holidays can add extra delays. Usually embassies want to see you’re physically in the country when applying, so sending it in before arriving may not fly. If you apply on Dec 19, one month might be enough, but it’s tight with Christmas/New Year closures. I’d recommend preparing all docs in advance and double-checking requirements before you fly.

Also, if this is your first DTV run, I'd advise don’t wing it too much, you can get a solid guide. I have searched everywhere and found (Thailand DTV Visa Guide) on Amazon. It's the best I’ve seen so far. It clears up details like this and saves a lot of guesswork.

Why not apply nearby In Vietnam, Indonesia etc since you are in Thailand? Someone recently had their DTV revoked and banned from Thailand for a year for not being in the country where he submitted his application.

I would not take that risk, they can see from where he applies.
